Chapter 7 - The Betrayal Within

The luxury of the gala felt like a distant memory three nights later when a blaring klaxon ripped through the Valenti estate at 3:00 AM.
Madeline bolted upright in bed, throwing on her robe and rushing out into the hallway. Downstairs, the heavy security doors were sealed tight, and the sound of shouting echoed from the master study.
She hurried down the stairs, slipping past armed guards stationed at every corner. As she approached the study, the door was half-open. Inside, Adrian stood over the mahogany desk, his face carved from granite. Luca and two other senior enforcers stood nearby, holding a pale, shaking man in handcuffs: Thomas, the estate’s chief accountant.
“You sold the shipping manifests to the Moretti syndicate,” Adrian said, his voice terrifyingly calm. “You gave them the exact departure times of our cargo vessels off the Jersey coast.”
“Boss, please!” Thomas sobbed, dropping to his knees. “They threatened my family! They said if I didn’t give them the codes, my daughter would—”
“Silence,” Adrian interrupted, raising a single finger. He didn't raise his voice, but the sheer menace in his tone made the air pressure drop. “You knew the rules when you entered my employ. Loyalty is absolute. Betrayal is paid in blood.”
Madeline stepped into the room, her presence immediately cutting through the electric tension. “Adrian, stop.”
Adrian turned his head sharply, his gray eyes flashing with cold fury. “This doesn't concern you, Madeline. Get back to your room.”
“It does concern me,” Madeline insisted, stepping closer, ignoring Luca’s warning gesture. She looked down at the trembling accountant, her sharp, analytical mind—honed by years of corporate restructuring and survival—spinning rapidly. “Thomas isn’t a high-level operative. Look at his hands. Look at his posture. He’s terrified, but he’s making a mistake.”
Thomas sniffled, looking up through tear-filled eyes. “Miss Brooks… please.”
“You didn’t sell those manifests to Moretti directly, did you, Thomas?” Madeline asked, her eyes narrowing. “You gave them to a third-party shell corporation registered in the Cayman Islands. A company managed by…” She paused, scanning the financial ledger open on the desk. “… Eleanor Vance’s husband.”
The room went dead silent.
Adrian slowly turned back to the desk, his eyes scanning the ledger data Madeline had pointed out. His expression darkened into something lethal.
“Not Moretti,” Adrian whispered, a dark realization dawning. “It was an inside corporate squeeze disguised as a mob hit.”
Adrian looked up at Madeline, a deep, burning respect blazing in his eyes beneath the dangerous facade. She had seen what his veteran enforcers had missed in the fog of war.
Adrian motioned to Luca. “Take Thomas to the medical wing. Give him a ticket out of the country and enough money to start over in Zurich. But make sure the Vances know we found out.”

As Luca hauled the sobbing accountant away, Adrian walked slowly toward Madeline until he was standing just inches away. The scent of cedar, smoke, and danger enveloped her.
“You continue to astonish me, Madeline Brooks,” Adrian murmured, his hand reaching out to gently tuck a strand of hair behind her ear. His fingers lingered against her cheek. “You are far more dangerous than any weapon in my arsenal.”
