Chapter 6 - The Society Gala

The annual Manhattan Maritime Charity Gala was the most exclusive event of the autumn season. Held in a sprawling Beaux-Arts ballroom overlooking Central Park, it was a glittering sea of diamond necklaces, bespoke tuxedos, and razor-sharp political maneuverings.
And tonight, Adrian Valenti was walking in with Madeline Brooks on his arm.
When Adrian had first told her she was attending, Madeline had panicked. But two hours later, a team of stylists sent by Adrian had arrived at the estate with a breathtaking gown—a deep emerald silk dress that hugged her curves, cascading down to the floor like liquid jade, paired with emerald drop earrings that caught the chandelier light.
As they stepped onto the red carpet, the flashbulbs erupted like a thunderstorm. Reporters strained forward, microphones thrusting into the air.
“Mr. Valenti! Who is your companion?” “Is this the new face of the Valenti shipping empire?”
Adrian’s expression was a mask of cold, untouchable arrogance. He kept his hand firmly at the small of Madeline’s back, guiding her past the ravenous press with proprietary authority.
Inside the ballroom, the whispers started immediately.
High-society socialites in haute couture whispered behind their jeweled fans, eyeing Madeline’s emerald gown with venomous envy. One particularly haughty woman, Eleanor Vance—wife of a rival shipping magnate—stepped directly into their path with a razor-thin smile.
“Adrian, darling,” Eleanor purred, running her gaze up and down Madeline with undisguised contempt. “How adventurous of you to bring… domestic help to the gala. Did you forget to dismiss her before you left the house, or are you simply running short on actual companions?”
The surrounding area went dead silent. Heads turned. Eavesdropping elites smirked, waiting for the scandal.
Madeline felt her cheeks warm, but before she could open her mouth to deliver a blistering, ice-cold retort, Adrian stepped forward.
His voice dropped to a terrifying, lethal register that silenced the entire music-filled room.
“Eleanor,” Adrian said smoothly, his eyes like glacial stone. “Miss Brooks is the guardian of my children and an honored guest at my side. If I ever hear you speak to her—or about her—with that tone of disrespect again, I will personally ensure your husband’s shipping licenses are revoked before sunrise. Do we understand each other?”
Eleanor’s face drained of all color. She stammered an apology and scurried away like a frightened mouse.
Adrian turned to Madeline, his expression softening just enough for only her to see. He extended his hand, his thumb gently brushing her palm.

“May I have this dance, Miss Brooks?” he asked softly.
Madeline smiled, her heart swelling against her ribs, and placed her hand in his. As they swept onto the dance floor, surrounded by envious glares and whispered gossip, she knew there was no turning back. She had entered the lion's den, and the lion had chosen her as his queen.
