Chapter 8 - The Showdown at the Docks

Before the sanctuary could officially open, one final ghost from the past had to be laid to rest.
Grant Vance, desperate and broke after his firm went under, had aligned himself with a small-time extortion ring attempting to steal commercial equipment from the estate’s lakefront dock construction site.
He thought he could slip onto the property at dusk, sabotage the construction vehicles, and demand a payoff from the insurance company.
He didn't realize that the estate’s security grid was monitored not by guards... but by Clara Bennett.
At 7:00 PM, my security terminal in the cottage beeped, displaying live camera feeds from the lower lake dock.
A man in a dark hoodie was pouring sugar into the fuel tank of a heavy excavator.
I didn't panic. I didn't hide.
I clicked the intercom button. “Matteo. We have a visitor at the dock.”
Ten minutes later, Grant was surrounded on the wooden pier by four armed estate guards, Leo, and Matteo Moretti.
Grant dropped his gas can, collapsing onto his knees, shaking with terror as the men closed in.
“Please!” Grant sobbed, throwing his hands in the air. “I just wanted money! Clara ruined my life! She took everything from me!”
I walked down the wooden steps of the dock, wearing my work boots and denim jacket, Bruno stepping calmly at my side.
Grant looked up at me, his eyes wild with pathetic anger. “Clara! Tell him to let me go! You owe me! I gave you seven years of your life!”
I stopped three feet from him.
I looked at the man who had spent seven years making me feel small, helpless, and broken.
I felt no fear. No anger. Only a quiet, profound pity.
“You didn't give me seven years, Grant,” I said, my voice steady as stone. “You took seven years. But I rebuilt myself in six months.”
I turned to Leo. “Call the local police. File charges for commercial trespass, attempted destruction of property, and extortion.”
“Clara, no!” Grant screamed as Leo slapped steel handcuffs onto his wrists. “You can’t do this to me! I’m your ex-husband!”
“You’re a trespasser on my land,” I corrected him calmly. “Take him away.”
As the police cruisers arrived at the estate gates to haul Grant off to county jail, Grant looked back one last time through the rear window of the squad car.

He saw me standing on the high stone pier, my hand resting on Bruno’s head, Matteo’s arm wrapped securely around my waist, the sunset painting the sky over Lake Geneva in brilliant gold and crimson.
Grant Vance finally realized the truth: Clara was never broken. She had simply been waiting for a world big enough to hold her.
