Chapter 6 - Cages and Freedom

The morning after the attack, the estate was silent.
The rain had stopped, leaving behind a cold, crisp fog that hung low over Lake Geneva.
Bruno was resting comfortably on a thick orthopaedic bed in the main mansion’s library, his shoulder neatly bandaged by the veterinarian. He was sleeping deeply, snoring softly under a warm wool blanket.
I sat in a high-backed leather chair beside him, wearing a dry sweater, sipping hot tea.
The library doors opened, and Matteo walked in.
He looked exhausted. Dark circles shadowed his eyes, his black shirt unbuttoned at the collar. He carried a leather document folder in his hands.
He sat on the coffee table across from me, setting the folder down.
“Luciano’s syndicate network in Chicago was dismantled three hours ago,” Matteo said quietly. “Federal authorities executed warrants on his docks based on evidence my team provided. He won't be coming near Lake Geneva again.”
I let out a long sigh of relief. “And Grant? And Bianca?”
“Grant fled the state last night after federal agents showed up at his office to audit his insurance firm,” Matteo said smoothly. “Bianca’s father has pulled her out of the city to avoid the scandal. None of them can hurt you anymore, Clara.”
I looked down at my tea. “Thank you, Matteo.”
Matteo stared at me for a long time. Then he opened the leather folder on the table.
Inside were legal deeds, blueprints, and property records.
“I had my attorneys draft these this morning,” Matteo said, his voice hesitant—a tone I had never heard from him before. “The forty acres bordering the eastern ridge of this estate... I am transferring the deed entirely into your name.”
I blinked, stunned. “What?”
“It includes the land, the cottage, and funding to build a full-scale canine rehabilitation sanctuary,” Matteo explained softly, pointing to the blueprints. “You can run it yourself. Hire your own staff. It will be 100% legally yours. No debt, no mortgages, no strings attached.”
I stared at the papers, my chest tightening. “Matteo... this is millions of dollars.”
“It’s freedom, Clara,” Matteo corrected gently. He leaned forward, taking my hands in his, his thumbs smoothing over my knuckles. “When you first came here, you told me you were afraid I would put you in a cage. You were right to be afraid. Men in my position are used to acquiring things and locking them away.”
He looked into my eyes with a raw, vulnerable truth that shook me to my core.
“I love you, Clara,” Matteo whispered, the words falling like gold in the quiet room. “I have loved you since the moment I saw you lying in the snow, telling me my dangerous dog was just hurt. But loving you means respecting that you are a woman who needs her own wings.”
Tears welled in my eyes, spilling over my lashes.
“The land is yours whether you stay with me or walk away,” Matteo continued, his voice trembling slightly. “You never have to ask permission from anyone ever again.”
I looked at the deeds. Then I looked at the man who had torn down Chicago to keep me safe, who had stood up to my past, and who was now handing me the key to my own future without asking for anything in return.
I stood up from the chair.
Matteo began to stand, looking uncertain, as if preparing for me to walk out the door.
Instead, I stepped between his knees, wrapped my arms tightly around his neck, and pulled his head down to mine.
I kissed him.
It wasn't a gentle, polite kiss. It was deep, fierce, and filled with three months of unspoken passion, trust, and undeniable love.
Matteo let out a ragged gasp against my lips, his heavy arms wrapping around my waist, lifting me off my feet, pulling me impossibly close against his chest as if he would never let go.
When we finally parted, our foreheads rested together, our breathing ragged in the warm library air.

“I’m not walking away, Matteo,” I whispered against his lips, my fingers tracing the silver scar on his cheek. “I spent my whole life looking for a home. I didn't realize it wasn't a place... it was you.”
Bruno let out a loud, contented snore from his bed, making us both laugh softly in the quiet sunlight.
