Chapter 10 - Peace at Last

The rain had cleared by the time I returned to the Whitmore estate, leaving the evening air crisp, clean, and smelling of damp earth and blooming jasmine.
As I walked up the stone pathway toward the grand double doors, I heard the faint sound of laughter drifting from the back garden. I paused, walking around the side of the house to take a look.
Daniel and Maya were standing by the newly restored fountain, covered in splashes of soil and holding a pair of gardening shears. They were laughing about something Rosa had yelled from the kitchen window, their faces flushed and happy. Luis was walking beside them, carrying a tray of iced tea, shaking his head with a wide, genuine grin.
Daniel looked up and saw me standing by the arbor.
“Mom! Come over here,” he called out, waving his hand. “Maya is trying to convince me that we should plant tomatoes right next to the front entrance.”
“If we do, the deer will eat them by Tuesday,” I called back, stepping onto the grass and walking toward them.
“See?” Daniel laughed, looking at Maya with an expression so open, so warm, and so completely unguarded that my heart swelled to its absolute limits.
“Mrs. Whitmore is entirely right,” Maya agreed with a playful wink. “We’ll put them in the back where they belong.”
As I joined them under the golden light of the garden lanterns, taking a glass of iced tea from Luis with a warm nod of thanks, I looked around at the people gathered here. There were no masks in this garden. There were no false titles, no cruel power games, no hidden recorders waiting in sagging pockets.

The storm had passed. The house was safe. And for the first time in a very long time, everything was exactly where it was supposed to be.
