Chapter 5 - The Smear Campaign

If Vanessa had possessed even an ounce of grace, she would have taken her losses and slipped quietly into the background. But grace was foreign to her. Pride, wounded ego, and a desperate addiction to luxury drove her forward.
Within twenty-four hours, the digital battlefield ignited.
Daniel’s phone began buzzing incessantly at dawn the next morning. Notifications flashed across his screen—missed calls from mutual friends, panicked texts from business associates, and links to public social media posts.
Vanessa had struck first.
Utilizing her large following as a lifestyle influencer and society commentator, she posted a meticulously crafted, tear-soaked video online. In it, she portrayed herself as the innocent victim of a controlling, emotionally abusive fiancé and a tyrannical, out-of-touch mother-in-law.
“Hi guys... I didn't want to say anything, because I wanted to protect someone I loved,” Vanessa sobbed into the camera, her makeup artfully smudged to look authentic. “For three years, I tried to fit into a family that demanded absolute perfection. But yesterday, things went too far. Daniel’s mother orchestrated a bizarre, humiliating trap to test my loyalty, treating me like a criminal in my own future home. When I stood up for myself, Daniel chose to abandon me right before our wedding, manipulated by a woman who cannot bear to share her son with anyone else. I’m heartbroken, exhausted, and honestly... terrified of their influence.”
The internet, ever hungry for high-society drama, devoured the story instantly.
Within hours, the hashtag #JusticeForVanessa was trending locally. Comment sections flooded with outrage. Trolls and sympathetic followers alike began bombarding the Whitmore Foundation’s official social media pages with hateful comments, accusing us of elitism, emotional abuse, and psychological torture.
“Have you seen this?” Daniel asked, holding out his tablet as he walked into my study. His face was pale, his jaw clenched tight. “She’s twisting the narrative entirely. People are calling the foundation’s office. They’re threatening protests.”
I set my teacup down on the saucer, the ceramic click sounding crisp in the quiet room. I didn't look flustered. After decades in the corporate world and running a multi-million-dollar philanthropic empire, I had seen tantrums from powerful people far more dangerous than an influencer with a smartphone.
“Let her talk, Daniel,” I said calmly. “A lie can travel halfway around the world while the truth is still putting on its shoes. But truth has a much longer stride.”

“Mom, she’s destroying our reputation,” Daniel protested, pacing across the Persian rug. “The board of directors is already calling me. They’re worried about public perception.”
“Then we give them reality,” I replied, standing up and smoothing down my cardigan. “Not with emotional rants or sob stories. With undeniable, unedited fact.”
