Chapter 7 - United Against the Darkness

Two weeks later, the grand probate courtroom was filled to absolute capacity.
Margaret Mercer sat at the defense table, wearing a dark blue jail jumpsuit, her grey hair unstyled and her wrists secured with heavy transport chains. Beside her sat her team of high-priced corporate defense attorneys, though their faces looked grim and defeated.
In the gallery sat Elena, Clara, Sarah, and their lead estate attorney. In the small waiting room outside, guarded by a family advocate, Noah and Maya were sitting together, coloring in the same book, sharing a box of fruit snacks—a bond forged instantly between two children who had both been robbed of their father by the same cold-hearted woman.
Margaret’s defense attorney stood up, making one final, desperate bid to preserve Margaret’s control over the Mercer Family Trust. "Your Honor, these documents produced by the plaintiff regarding an alleged illegitimate child in Vermont are unverified. Mrs. Margaret Mercer acted purely as a responsible trustee to protect the estate from fortune-seekers—"
"Silence, counsel," the judge ordered, his voice echoing across the wood-paneled room.
The judge picked up a stack of certified laboratory reports delivered that very morning.
"The court has received the court-ordered DNA match results conducted between the minor Noah Mercer and the minor Maya Lin," the judge announced, looking sternly over his reading glasses at Margaret. "The genetic probability of full paternal half-siblinghood is ninety-nine point nine percent. Maya Lin is unequivocally the biological daughter of the late David Mercer."
Margaret flinched as if struck, her head dropping into her chained hands.
"Furthermore," the judge continued, "in light of the criminal indictments for child abuse, illegal confinement, and grand fraud pending against Margaret Mercer, this court finds her completely unfit to serve as trustee, guardian, or representative of any aspect of the Mercer estate."
The judge slammed his gavel down with a sharp crack.

"It is hereby ordered that all Mercer Family Trust accounts be permanently restructured. Full trusteeship is transferred to a joint court-appointed trust managed by Elena Mercer and Sarah Lin for the sole benefit of Noah Mercer and Maya Lin upon their adulthood. Margaret Mercer is ordered to pay full financial restitution, and a permanent protection order is granted to both families."
As the bailiffs stood to lead Margaret back to her holding cell, she turned her tear-filled eyes toward Elena and Sarah. But neither woman looked at her with hatred. They looked at her with the cold, absolute certainty of mothers who had won their children's freedom.
