Chapter 5 - The Fall of Margaret Mercer

The attic door burst open as three armed sheriff’s deputies poured into the room, guns drawn.

"Drop the weapon! Drop it now!" the lead officer shouted.

Margaret lowered the gun slowly, her hands trembling violently as the reality of her collapse crashed down around her. The guard immediately raised his hands, stepping away from Elena.

"This is my home!" Margaret screamed as a deputy cuffed her wrists behind her back. "She broke into my house! She is a thief!"

"Mrs. Mercer, you are under arrest for brandishing a firearm, illegal confinement, and obstruction of justice," the deputy stated, leading her toward the stairs. "And we have a warrant from the district attorney regarding child endangerment charges stemming from Grant Mercer’s confession."

Elena walked out of the mansion into the cool night air, holding David’s lockbox securely under her arm.

Clara was waiting by the police cruiser, wrapping a warm blanket around Elena’s shoulders.

"Did you find it?" Clara asked urgently.

Elena pulled out the birth certificate and the letters from Sarah Lin. "Her name is Maya. She's nine years old. And she lives in a small town outside Burlington."

Clara looked at the documents, her eyes wide with amazement. "With Margaret in jail and Grant facing felony child abuse charges, we can file an emergency petition to freeze all Mercer trust accounts tomorrow morning. But Elena... if we go to Vermont, we are opening a door that can never be closed."

Elena looked up at the stars, thinking of Noah sleeping safely in his bed, and then of a nine-year-old girl in Vermont who had been hidden away in the shadows for nearly a decade.

"We leave at dawn," Elena said softly. "It's time to bring David's children together."
