Chapter 5 - The War of Perception

By 6:00 a.m. the following morning, the video of Julian slapping me on stage and the audio leak of the concrete fraud had amassed over forty million views across social media platforms.
The media dubbed it The Wedding Day Collapse.
From my mother’s small brick home in South Jersey, I sat at the kitchen table with a cup of black coffee, watching the morning news. On the screen, a reporter stood outside the iron gates of Brightwater Commons, where yellow crime scene tape and city police cruisers blocked the entrance.
“In a shocking turn of events,” the news anchor announced, “Rutherford Development Corporation stock has plunged by seventy-two percent overnight following the arrest of heir Julian Rutherford and the immediate shutdown of their flagship three-hundred-million-dollar development.”
The screen shifted to a press conference held outside the county courthouse by Eleanor Rutherford and her team of crisis management attorneys.
Eleanor stood behind a podium wearing dark sunglasses, her voice dripping with calculated sorrow.
“Our family is deeply heartbroken by the erratic, malicious actions of Ms. Elena Vance,” Eleanor told the gathered reporters. “Ms. Vance was terminated as an independent consultant three weeks ago due to technical incompetence. Unhappy with her dismissal and seeking financial revenge, she staged a fake altercation, fabricated digital audio files using artificial intelligence, and attempted to extort our family on what was supposed to be a sacred day.”
My mother slammed her mug onto the counter. “Fabricated AI?! That monster slapped you in front of three hundred people!”
“It’s damage control,” I said calmly, taking a sip of my coffee. “They’re trying to turn a structural engineering crime into a domestic dispute. If they can make the public believe the audio is fake, their insurance companies won't pull their liability coverage.”
My phone chimed on the table. It was an encrypted text message from Agent Vance.
“State Attorney General is convening an emergency grand jury at 2:00 PM. We need your raw data files, physical core sample logs, and original metadata before Eleanor’s PR firm shifts public opinion.”
I opened my laptop. “Priya,” I called out toward the living room where my friend was sleeping on the sofa. “Fire up the secondary server. It’s time to release the core drill photos.”
If the Rutherfords wanted a war of perception, they were fighting a street artist with a paintbrush while standing in front of an engineer with a laser level.
I had not just saved audio files.
During my night audits at the Brightwater site three weeks prior, I had used a specialized ultrasonic pulse velocity sensor to scan the internal density of the concrete pillars supporting Tower Three. The scans proved that the internal core was riddled with air pockets, honeycombing, and rusted, non-spec rebar.
By 11:00 a.m., we uploaded the complete, peer-reviewed technical report—along with timestamped video files showing Silas Bram personally overseeing the delivery of uncertified concrete trucks at midnight—to a public open-source engineering database.

Within two hours, the American Society of Civil Engineers issued a formal public statement confirming the validity of my findings and revoking Rutherford Development’s safety accreditations nationwide.
Eleanor’s PR narrative didn't just fail. It was pulverized beneath thirty thousand pages of undeniable technical truth.
