Chapter 4 - The Shattered Glass

Flashbulbs exploded like lightning strikes.

Reporters at Table 4 whipped out their smartphones, recording the glowing LED screens and the panicked expressions of the Rutherford family. Major investors stood up, chairs scraping violently against the parquet floor, shouting over the noise of the audio playback.

“Desmond! What the hell is the meaning of this?!” shouted Arthur Sterling, the primary financial guarantor for the Brightwater project. “Did you use substandard concrete on a residential skyscraper?!”

Desmond Rutherford stood frozen behind the podium, his face turning an unhealthy shade of purple. “Turn it off! Cut the power! Cut the damn power!” he screamed toward the AV booth.

Silas Bram sprinted down the side aisle toward the technicians, but Priya blocked the narrow passage with a heavy metal equipment case, locking the booth door from the inside.

Julian stared at me, his eyes wide with a terrifying mix of humiliation and rage. “You crazy bitch,” he hissed, rushing toward me on the stage. “You just ruined my family!”

He grabbed my shoulders, shaking me violently in front of three hundred horrified witnesses.

“Let go of her!” my mother screamed from Table 12, standing up so fast her wine glass shattered against the floor.

Before Julian could drag me off the stage, two uniformed hotel security officers—followed by four sharp-suited agents wearing federal credentials—marched through the main ballroom doors.

Lead Special Agent Marcus Vance of the Department of Housing and Urban Development Office of Inspector General stepped directly onto the stage.

“Julian Rutherford!” Agent Vance declared, his voice cutting through the hysteria. “Step away from the lady right now!”

Julian froze, his hands dropping from my dress. “This is a private event! You have no right to be here!”

“We have a federal warrant for the seizure of all digital records, physical soil samples, and corporate communications belonging to Rutherford Development Corporation,” Agent Vance stated, pulling a gold badge and a certified court order from his coat. “And based on the audio evidence currently broadcast to this room, as well as eyewitness testimony of physical assault, you are under arrest.”

Two federal officers stepped behind Julian, forcing his arms behind his back.

CLICK.

The cold steel of handcuffs snapped around Julian’s wrists—the wrists that were supposed to wear the platinum watch I had bought him as a wedding gift.

Eleanor Rutherford shrieked, collapsing into her chair as photographers swarmed the front of the stage, catching every second of her son being cuffed in his wedding tuxedo beneath his own fraudulent blueprints.

Desmond tried to slip toward the service exit, but two municipal police officers blocked his path.

“Mr. Desmond Rutherford,” an officer said. “City building inspectors have just issued an emergency freeze on all Rutherford construction sites. You are required to accompany us to the district attorney’s office for questioning regarding reckless endangerment and corporate fraud.”

I stood at the edge of the stage, breathing slowly.

I unpinned my heavy white veil, let it drop to the floor, and stepped over the satin lace.

Priya met me at the base of the stairs, handing me a plain black coat. I wrapped it around my shoulders, covering the silk wedding gown, and walked toward my mother.

“Elena...” my mother whispered, her hands shaking as she touched my unbruised cheek. “Are you okay?”

May you like

I looked back one last time at the stage. Julian was being dragged out by federal agents, cursing my name while news cameras filmed his downfall.

“I’m not okay yet, Mom,” I said, taking her hand tightly. “But the foundation is clear.”
