Chapter 6 - Walking Away from the Throne

The Grand Hyatt Ballroom was an explosion of luxury, high fashion, and media frenzy.

Over two hundred journalists, international investors, camera crews, and high-society figures filled the space. Massive digital banners hung from the high ceilings, displaying the sleek, golden architectural renders of the Apex Sovereign Tower—a $10 billion project set to be the tallest skyscraper in the Western Hemisphere.

On the elevated stage sat a long mahogany table lined with floral arrangements, micro-phones, and leather-bound contract folders.

Victoria Harrison sat in the center of the stage, wearing an emerald-green silk suit, sipping sparkling water, and chatting comfortably with the Mayor of Chicago and the Chairman of the Dubai Sovereign Fund.

At 9:55 AM, the side doors opened.

Nathan walked into the hall, flanked by four private security guards. He was dressed impeccably, his jaw set, his posture commanding.

The press room went wild with camera flashes.

"Mr. Harrison! Over here!" "Nathan! Is it true this deal will make Harrison Global the most valuable real estate firm in history?!" "Mr. Harrison! A comment on the Vance merger!"

Nathan ignored the shouting reporters, stepping up onto the stage. He took his seat beside his mother.

Victoria leaned over, her smile fixed for the cameras, her voice a low venomous murmur. "I see you managed to clean yourself up after spending the night in the slums. The pens are ready, Nathan. Sign the documents, give a three-minute speech about legacy, and let’s secure our family's fortune forever."

Nathan looked at the heavy Montblanc pen resting on the leather portfolio before him. He opened the first page of the multi-billion-dollar contract.

SOVEREIGN APEX REALTY AGREEMENT PARTY A: NATHAN HARRISON, CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER, HARRISON GLOBAL.

The Master of Ceremonies stepped to the podium. "Ladies and gentlemen! We stand on the precipice of history. Today, the King of Concrete, Mr. Nathan Harrison, signs the contract that will reshape the Chicago skyline forever!"

Applause thundered through the ballroom.

Nathan picked up the pen.

He looked out at the sea of flashing lights, expensive suits, and greedy eyes. He thought of his mother’s threat to tear two four-year-old boys away from their mother. He thought of Emma counting coins at a bakery counter to buy a cinnamon roll. He thought of Ethan’s hand-drawn rocket and Noah’s quiet, terrified voice: "If there isn't enough money, I don't need any bread."

Nathan lowered the pen.

He reached for the desktop microphone, pulling it toward his mouth.

Victoria frowned, whispering sharply: "Nathan, what are you doing? Just sign the document!"

Nathan didn't look at her. He looked straight into the central news camera broadcasting live to millions of households across the globe.

"Good morning," Nathan’s voice resonated through the high-grade speakers, crystal clear, calm, and absolute. "Before we begin today's signing, I have an important corporate announcement to make."

The room quieted down, reporters leaning forward attentively.

"Effective immediately," Nathan continued, "I am stepping down as Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of Harrison Global."

A collective gasp echoed through the ballroom. Victoria froze, her face turning ghost-white. "Nathan! Are you insane?!" she hissed, reaching out to grab his sleeve.

Nathan pulled his arm away cleanly, standing up from his chair.

"Furthermore," Nathan announced, his voice ringing like iron hitting stone, "I am officially canceling Harrison Global's participation in the Apex Sovereign Tower project."

The entire press room erupted into utter chaos. Reporters jumped from their seats shouting questions, camera operators rushed the stage, and the Dubai delegation stood up in shock.

"Nathan!" Victoria shrieked, standing up, her composure completely shattering in front of live international television. "You are destroying this family!"

Nathan turned to his mother, looking down at her with a calm, pitying expression.

"This family was destroyed six years ago when you pushed my wife out the door, Victoria," Nathan said, loud enough for the front-row microphones to catch every word. "I built concrete towers for ten years thinking I was creating a legacy. Today, I am going home to build a life with my sons."

He tossed the Montblanc pen onto the open contract, turned his back on the ten-billion-dollar deal, and walked off the stage.
