Chapter 4 - The Viper Awakens

Nathan stepped out onto the cold balcony of Emma's apartment building, sliding his phone open.

"Mother," he said, his voice dropping into the icy, command tone he used in boardrooms.

"Nathan," Victoria Harrison’s voice came through the speaker, razor-sharp and utterly devoid of maternal warmth. "Where are you? The senior board members of the Dubai Sovereign Group have been waiting at the hotel for forty minutes. The signing ceremony for the Apex Tower project is in twelve hours."

"I was delayed," Nathan said, staring down at the quiet street below.

"Delayed?" Victoria scoffed. "By what? I just received a flagged audit report from Harrison Global's charitable foundation. A five-million-dollar anonymous wire transfer to a public middle school in Lincoln Park? Authorized by your private key?"

Nathan’s hand tightened around the phone until his knuckles turned white. "What I do with my private capital is my business, Victoria."

"It becomes corporate business when you distribute funds to the school where Emma Parker works!" Victoria snapped.

The air in Nathan’s lungs froze. "You're tracking her?"

"I have kept tabs on that girl since the day she took my settlement check and signed the NDA," Victoria said smoothly, her voice laced with aristocratic arrogance. "I made sure she stayed far away from our brand. And now I hear rumors through our legal team that she has children, Nathan. Children whose birth dates align suspiciously with your final months together."

Nathan felt a surge of lethal rage—a rage so intense he almost threw the phone over the balcony railing.

"Listen to me very carefully, Victoria," Nathan whispered, his voice dangerously low. "If you so much as send a private investigator within three blocks of Emma or those boys, I will strip Harrison Global of every asset under my personal signature before sunrise."

A heavy silence hung over the line.

Then Victoria let out a low, chilling laugh. "You always were emotional about that girl, Nathan. But let me remind you of reality. You own thirty percent of the voting shares. I control forty. The board controls the rest. The Apex Tower contract is worth ten billion dollars. If you step out of line, if you cause a public scandal involving an illegitimate family that damages our stock price before the public offering, the board will vote to remove you as Chief Executive Officer."

"Is that a threat?" Nathan asked.

"It's a fact," Victoria replied coldly. "Sign the Apex deal tomorrow morning. Marry Charlotte Vance as planned next month to consolidate the Vance Real Estate merger. Keep your little side project hidden in the shadows where it belongs, or I will use every legal resource this family possesses to ensure those children are declared wards of a trust and separated from that penniless schoolteacher forever."

The line went dead.

Nathan stood on the balcony, the freezing Chicago wind whipping through his hair.

He looked back through the glass door. Inside, Emma was sitting at her small kitchen table, grading homework papers under a dim yellow lamp, occasionally glancing toward the hallway where her twin boys slept safely.

Victoria wanted him to sign the deal that would make him the undisputed King of Concrete. She wanted him to marry a society heiress he didn't love, bury his sons in legal non-disclosure agreements, and leave Emma to count coins for the rest of her life.

Nathan slipped his phone back into his coat pocket.

For the first time in his life, the King of Concrete didn't feel like a ruler. He felt like a man who had been wearing gold chains for ten years and mistaking them for armor.

He opened the glass door and walked back inside.
