Chapter 7 - The Gala of Lies

The Greenwich Country Club was transformed into a glittering palace of light, marble, and silk for the annual Vance Foundation Cultural Gala.

Valet attendants in red coats lined the grand circular driveway, parking Teslas, Bentleys, and Lamborghinis. Inside the grand ballroom, crystal chandeliers cast a warm, golden glow over five hundred guests dressed in black-tie attire.

At the head table sat Senator Charles Vance, an imposing man with snow-white hair, flanked by his daughter, Victoria, and Marcus Sterling.

Victoria looked stunning in an emerald-green satin gown, wearing a multi-carat diamond necklace. Marcus sat beside her in a bespoke tuxedo, looking like the epitome of high-society success.

Chloe sat between them, dressed in a stiff white silk dress. Her face was deathly pale, her small hands folded tightly in her lap.

"She looks nervous, Victoria," Senator Vance noted, cutting into his filet mignon.

"She's fine, Father," Victoria purred smoothly, placing a heavy hand on Chloe’s shoulder and squeezing just hard enough to send a sharp warning. "She’s just mentally preparing for her performance. Aren't you, Chloe?"

"Yes... Miss Victoria," Chloe whispered, her eyes glued to the white tablecloth.

Marcus smiled, raising his champagne glass. "To a monumental evening for the Sterling and Vance families."

At the main podium, the Headmaster of Oakridge Academy stepped up to the microphone.

"Ladies and gentlemen, distinguished guests, and members of the press!" the Headmaster’s voice echoed through the booming sound system. "Tonight, we celebrate not only music and culture, but the incredible philanthropic leadership of the Vance Foundation and Sterling Capital!"

The audience erupted into polite, elegant applause.

"Before our keynote address," the Headmaster continued, "we are privileged to witness a piano performance by one of Oakridge’s most talented young students—Chloe Sterling, accompanied by her official maternal sponsor and artistic instructor, Victoria Vance!"

Victoria stood up, smoothing her dress, offering a dazzling, practiced smile to the flashing news cameras. She took Chloe by the wrist and guided her toward the massive Steinway grand piano situated on the central elevated stage.

Large high-definition multimedia screens hung on either side of the stage, currently displaying the golden emblem of the Vance Foundation.

As Victoria settled beside Chloe at the bench, Marcus leaned back in his front-row chair, adjusting his gold cufflinks, his chest swelling with pride and arrogance.

He had won. He had secured his fortune, erased his broke wife, and cemented his place at the absolute peak of high society.

Suddenly, the house lights flickered.

The smooth classical background music cut out abruptly, replaced by a loud, static hum over the main audio system.

"What's going on with the AV system?" Senator Vance growled, turning to his assistant.

On stage, Victoria paused, her fingers hovering above the piano keys, a look of annoyed confusion crossing her face.

The giant multimedia screens flashed bright red.

Then, the golden Vance emblem vanished.

In its place, a video began to play.
