Chapter 6 - The Trap is Set

By Friday evening, the atmosphere inside our Harbor Point estate was suffocatingly quiet.

Marcus arrived home at 7:00 PM, looking flushed with victory. He poured himself a glass of scotch and stood in the living room, staring out at the ocean sunset.

"The preparation for the Vance Gala tomorrow night is complete," Marcus announced to the room, not bothering to look at me as I cleared the dinner plates. "Chloe will be performing the main piano prelude before Senator Vance’s keynote speech."

"That sounds wonderful, Marcus," I said softly, setting the plates down.

"The school board, the governor, and the entire high-society press will be attending," Marcus continued, his eyes glittering with ruthless ambition. "Victoria and I will be receiving the Cultural Leadership Award on behalf of Oakridge."

I paused, turning to face him. "And what about me, Marcus?"

Marcus chuckled, taking a slow sip of his scotch. "What about you, Elena?"

"Should I prepare a dress for tomorrow night?" I asked, keeping my voice naive, plaintive. "I’d really love to see Chloe play."

Marcus set his glass down on the marble table with a sharp clack. He walked over to me, stopping just inches away, looking down at me with pure, unadulterated contempt.

"Have you not listened to a word I’ve said for seven years, Elena?" he said softly, his voice dripping with condescending poison. "You do not belong in those rooms. You would look like a maid who accidentally wandered into a palace. You stay here. You keep the house quiet. And when we return, you will have Chloe’s supper ready."

I looked up into his eyes.

For seven years, I would have lowered my head, felt the hot burn of shame, and retreated into my room.

Instead, I looked straight into his soul and smiled.

It wasn't a meek smile. It was a cold, beautiful, razor-sharp smile that made Marcus freeze.

"What's so funny?" he demanded, his brow furrowing in sudden irritation.

"Nothing, Marcus," I said smoothly, stepping past him toward the staircase. "I was just thinking about how much can change in a single night."

"Elena!" he called out, his voice laced with sudden authority. "What is that supposed to mean?"

"It means I hope you enjoy the Gala tomorrow night, Marcus," I said, pausing on the third step and looking back over my shoulder. "Make sure you take lots of pictures. It’s going to be a night Greenwich never forgets."

I walked up to my room and locked the door behind me.

Downstairs, I heard Marcus pacing back and forth in the hallway, his footsteps heavy and agitated. For the first time in seven years, he felt a flicker of uncertainty.

He didn't know that three miles away, in a high-security law office, Arthur Pendelton was finalizing a ninety-page emergency legal petition.

Attached to the petition were:

The 4K video of Victoria physically assaulting and threatening Chloe at the conservatory.

The audio recording of Chloe’s plea at Oakridge Academy.

The original $45 million Vance contract detailing the illegal maternal transfer.

The forensic financial audit proving Marcus had laundered $12 million in Vance Foundation funds through offshore shell companies.

An emergency application for an immediate Ex Parte Custody Order, stripping Marcus and Victoria of all legal access to Chloe.

The hammer was lifted.

Tomorrow night, at the Greenwich Country Club, in front of five hundred of Connecticut’s most powerful figures, the hammer would fall.
