Chapter 4 - The Web Unravels

Two days later, the news of the "Garage Torture Conspiracy" broke across every major television network and news outlet in the state.
The public outcry was instantaneous and furious. Mr. Henderson’s video footage, though partially blurred by news stations to protect my identity, clearly showed the depravity of Tyler and Evelyn’s actions. Protesters gathered outside the county courthouse holding signs demanding the maximum penalty for domestic violence and murder conspiracy.
Inside the interrogation room at the precinct, Detective Miller sat across from Chloe Bennett.
Chloe was sobbing hysterically, her designer handbag sitting abandoned on the cold metal table. Her former confidence had entirely collapsed under the weight of federal fraud and conspiracy charges.
“I didn't know he was hurting her!” Chloe wailed, wiping away her mascara. “Tyler told me they were separated! He told me she was sickly and wanted to sign her life insurance over to help him pay off his business debts! I swear I didn't know!”
Detective Miller leaned forward, resting his elbows on the table and tossing a printout of text messages between her and Tyler onto the steel surface.
“Is that right, Chloe?” Detective Miller asked coldly. “Because six days ago, Tyler sent you a text reading: 'The smoke smell is getting bad, but she’s almost gone. Make sure the policy payout is approved by Friday.' And you replied: 'Everything is ready, baby. Just make sure there are no marks on her face for the casket.'”
Chloe went entirely pale. Her jaw worked silently, but no sound came out.
“That makes you an accessory to attempted first-degree murder, insurance fraud, and conspiracy,” Detective Miller stated flatly. “The District Attorney is offering you one chance. You testify against Tyler and Evelyn, or you go down right beside them for twenty-five years.”
Meanwhile, in a separate holding cell, Tyler was realizing that his mother’s promises of invincibility were completely worthless.
Evelyn sat across from him during their short attorney consultation, her hair unkempt and her voice sharp with desperation.
“You have to take the blame, Tyler!” Evelyn whispered fiercely, grabbing his wrists through the wire mesh screen. “If you tell them I helped you, we both go to prison! If you take the charge, I can stay on the outside, fire that lawyer, sell the house, and hire a top-tier defense team to get you out on appeal!”
Tyler looked at his mother, the scales finally falling from his eyes.
“You told me to use the iron bar, Mom,” Tyler said, his voice flat and hollow. “You held the door. You brought the cigarettes. You did this to her as much as I did.”
“Don't you dare speak to me like that!” Evelyn hissed. “I did it for us! I did it so you could have a life with Chloe and the money!”
“Chloe is talking to the police right now!” Tyler snapped back, his voice rising into a shout. “She gave them the text messages! We’re never getting out!”

The door opened, and a corrections officer stepped in. “Consultation time is over. Back to your cells.”
As Evelyn was led away, she looked back at her son, but Tyler turned his head toward the wall. The toxic bond that had fueled their cruelty was breaking under the crushing weight of reality.
