Chapter 2 - The Breach

The heavy wooden garage door buckled inward with a deafening crack as the police task force used a battering ram.
Dust, wood splinters, and the sharp stench of hot metal filled the air.
“POLICE! DROP THE WEAPON! GET ON THE GROUND NOW!” yelled Officer Ramirez, his sidearm raised and aiming straight at my husband, Tyler.
Tyler froze, his hands trembling as he held the glowing red iron bar inches from my face. The heat radiating off the metal singed my hair, but I was too weak to flinch. His mother, Evelyn, let out a piercing shriek and dropped her pack of cigarettes, stumbling backward over a stack of cardboard boxes.
“Drop it!” Officer Ramirez barked again, his voice echoing off the cold concrete walls.
Tyler snapped out of his trance. The smug, sadistic arrogance that had defined him for months vanished, replaced by sheer, naked panic. He let the heavy iron bar fall to the floor with a terrifying clatter and raised his hands into the air.
“Officers! It’s not what it looks like!” Evelyn shrieked, her voice frantic as she tried to step between the police and her son. “This girl is unstable! She was hurting herself! We were trying to restrain her—we were trying to help her!”
Two officers moved in like thunder. One pinned Tyler to the concrete floor, pulling his arms behind his back and snapping steel handcuffs around his wrists. Tyler groaned as his cheek was pressed against the same oil-stained floor where he had tortured me.
The second officer grabbed Evelyn’s arms, forcing her to her knees despite her hysterical screeches.
“You have the right to remain silent!” the officer shouted over her screaming. “Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law!”
From the driveway outside, our neighbor, Mr. Henderson—a quiet fifty-year-old retired veteran—stepped forward with his smartphone still held high in his hands, recording every second.
“I’ve got it all on video!” Mr. Henderson called out to the officers. “I have the heat bar, the cigarettes, the mother encouraging him, and the audio! It’s all saved to a live server!”
Evelyn turned her head toward Mr. Henderson, her eyes filled with pure venom. “You nosy old bastard! You ruined everything!”
A paramedic team rushed past the officers into the garage, carrying a medical bag and a folding stretcher. The lead paramedic, a woman named Sarah, knelt beside me on the freezing ground. She gently gently touched my shoulder, her eyes wide with shock as she took in the state of my charred sweatshirt and my swollen, blistered skin.
“Can you hear me, ma'am?” Sarah asked softly, her voice trembling slightly. “I’m Sarah. You’re safe now. Help is here.”
I opened my dry lips, but no sound came out. I tried to look down at my belly, my fingers weakly twitching against my torn clothing.
“The baby...” I managed to rasp, tears finally spilling down my dirt-caked cheeks. “Please... protect my baby...”
“We’ve got you,” Sarah whispered, carefully sliding a neck brace into place and signaling her partner to assist with the backboard. “We’re taking you to the hospital right now. Hold on.”

As they lifted me onto the stretcher, I saw Tyler looking up from the floor. For the first time in three years, I saw fear in his eyes. Real, permanent fear.
I pulled the hospital blanket closer to my chest, closed my eyes, and let out a long, ragged breath. The garage was behind me.
