Chapter 9 - The Reckoning

In a flash of motion, Esteban pulled a heavy, black-steel utility knife from his belt, flicking the blade open with a sharp, metallic snap.

“Stay back!” Tomás yelled, lunging forward to put himself between Esteban and us.

“Tomás, no! He has a knife!” I screamed.

Esteban lunged like a cornered animal, swinging the blade in a wide, vicious arc. Tomás dodged just in time, but the blade clipped his shoulder, tearing his shirt and drawing a bright line of crimson across his skin.

“Tomás!” Lucía shrieked, throwing herself off the bed toward him.

Esteban raised the knife again, his eyes wild and unhinged, stepping toward my brother with murderous intent.

Adrenaline surged through my veins. I didn't think; I only reacted. I grabbed the heavy brass bedside lamp by its base, swung it with every ounce of strength I possessed, and smashed it directly across the back of Esteban’s head.

CRASH.

The ceramic and brass shattered into a dozen pieces.

Esteban grunted, his eyes rolling back into his head. The knife slipped from his fingers, clattering loudly against the hardwood floor. He swayed on his feet for a fraction of a second before collapsing face-first onto the carpet, completely unconscious.

The room fell dead silent, save for our ragged, terrified breathing.

Tomás was bleeding from his shoulder, clutching his arm as Lucía frantically tore a pillowcase into strips to bind the wound. I stood over Esteban’s motionless body, the shattered lamp still clutched in my trembling hands, staring down at the man I had loved and trusted for five years.

He was breathing, but he was finished.

From downstairs, the sound of blaring sirens began to wail through the quiet night air, cutting through the darkness with flashing red and blue lights reflecting against the bedroom windows.

“Did you… did you call them?” Tomás whispered, looking up at me with tears streaming down his face.

“I didn't have to,” I said, my voice shaking as I dropped the broken lamp. “Lucía set the router to stream the audio directly to the local police precinct’s emergency server the moment we heard him at the door.”

Tomás looked over at Lucía, who was kneeling beside him, her hands stained with his blood. He reached out, pulling her into his arms, burying his face in her shoulder as he sobbed openly.

“I’m sorry,” Tomás choked out. “I’m so sorry I didn't listen to you. I was so blind…”

“It’s over now, my love,” Lucía whispered, holding him tight, her dark eyes finally free of the shadows that had haunted her for years.

Ten minutes later, federal police officers and paramedics swarmed our house.

Esteban was handcuffed while still unconscious on the floor, hauled away in zip-ties and stretcher cuffs by federal agents who had already seized his black ledger, the syringe, and the digital audio confession.

As they carried him out of the house into the flashing lights of the cruiser, he regained consciousness just enough to glare at me one last time with pure, unadulterated hatred.

I didn't flinch. I stood tall in the doorway, my hand resting gently on my brother’s shoulder, watching the monster who had tried to destroy our family finally get dragged into the dark.
