Chapter 3 - Whispers in the Daylight

The morning sun poured through the kitchen windows, painting bright geometric shapes across the spotless white tile floor. To anyone passing by, our home looked like a portrait of domestic tranquility.

Tomás sat at the dining table, laughing as he buttered a piece of toast, completely oblivious to the tectonic shifts happening beneath our roof.

“I’m telling you, the new contract with the municipal bureau is going to change everything,” Tomás said, smiling proudly at Esteban, who sat opposite him sipping black coffee. “If Esteban hadn't reviewed my proposal last night, I never would have caught those zoning discrepancies.”

Esteban smiled warmly, the picture of an supportive older brother and a pillar of the community. “Just looking out for you, little brother. We want you and Lucía to build a solid foundation here in the city.”

At the stove, Lucía stood quietly, flipping pancakes with a steady hand. Her face was pale, dark circles shadowing her eyes beneath the bright morning light. She hadn't said a single word to me since we woke up. When our eyes met briefly across the kitchen, her gaze was a warning: Act normal. Play your part.

I forced a tight smile, setting a plate of eggs on the table. “You were up late working again, Esteban?”

Esteban didn't blink. He set his coffee mug down with a soft clink, his eyes locking onto mine with a steady, unreadable gaze. “I heard some noise around two in the morning. Thought I heard someone moving in the hallway. Checked the perimeter, but everything was secure.”

My hand tightened around the handle of the spatula. He checked the perimeter. He wasn't checking for intruders. He was checking to see if anyone was awake. He was checking to see if his nightly ritual had been compromised.

“Must have been Lucía having another nightmare,” I said carefully, keeping my voice level. “She gets them frequently.”

Tomás looked up, frowning with concern as he watched his new wife. “Babe, are you sure you’re okay? Maybe living in the city is harder on you than we thought. If you want, we can look into renting a small apartment of our own—”

“No!” Lucía snapped a little too quickly. She caught herself instantly, lowering her gaze and turning down the heat on the stove. Her hands trembled slightly as she set the spatula aside. “No, Tomás… I mean, I love staying here. With you. And… with Clara and Esteban. It’s just an adjustment. That’s all.”

Tomás smiled softly, walking over to wrap his arms around her waist from behind, kissing the side of her neck. “We’ll get through it, cariña. We’re a family now.”

Watching them, a knot twisted in my chest. Tomás had no idea. He was so deeply in love with Lucía, so proud of his new life, so trusting of his older brother, that he was blind to the dark current pulling us all under.

After breakfast, Tomás left for his new job site, and Esteban kissed my cheek before heading off to his architectural firm downtown.

“Have a good day at home, honey,” Esteban whispered, his lips brushing my skin just a little too coldly. “Try to get some rest. You look exhausted.”

As soon as the front door clicked shut and his luxury sedan backed out of the driveway, the silence in the house felt heavy, laden with unsaid horrors.

I turned around to find Lucía standing in the doorway of the kitchen, holding a dish towel, her knuckles white.

“He knows,” Lucía whispered in Spanish, her voice shaking. “He knows that we were awake last night.”

“How could he?” I whispered back, my heart pounding. “We didn't make a sound.”

“He doesn't need to hear us,” Lucía said, stepping closer, her eyes wide with a terror that went deeper than anything I had ever seen. “He listens to the breathing. He listens to the heartbeat of the house. And Clara… if he suspects that you know what he is doing in the dead of night… you are no longer safe here.”

“What is he doing, Lucía?” I demanded, grabbing her by the shoulders. “Stop talking in riddles! What does he do at two in the morning? Who is he looking for?”

Lucía looked down at my hands on her shoulders, then slowly raised her eyes to meet mine.

“He is not looking for anyone,” she whispered. “He is finishing what he started with his first wife.”
