Chapter 7 - The Legal Siege

Three weeks after his public arrest, Daniel sat in a sterile, fluorescent-lit consultation room at the County Detention Center, wearing an orange jumpsuit.

Across the metal table sat his court-appointed defense attorney, a weary, overworked man named David Miller.

"I need you to listen to me carefully, Daniel," David said, spreading out a mountain of legal briefs across the table. "The prosecution’s case against you for the corporate embezzlement is ironclad. They have digital audit trails, forged signatures, and bank deposit slips linking the three million dollars directly to your mother’s and sister’s accounts."

"What about the divorce?" Daniel rasped, his skin pale, his eyes sunken. "What about my share of the marital assets? We were married for six years! In this state, marital property is split fifty-fifty!"

David Miller let out a tired sigh, rubbing the bridge of his nose. "Daniel... did you sign a prenuptial agreement before you married Victoria Vance?"

"Yes, but my lawyer at the time said it was just a formality!" Daniel argued frantically. "It was supposed to protect her family’s inheritance! It shouldn't cover assets we acquired during the marriage!"

"The prenuptial agreement," David read from a red folder, "explicitly states that all assets purchased using funds originating from the Vance Trust, Vance Global Logistics, or subsidiary entities remain the sole, separate property of Victoria Vance. That includes the Hawthorne Estate, the vehicles, the corporate equity, and the bank accounts."

"What about spousal support?!" Daniel yelled, banging his handcuffed fists onto the metal table. "I have no income! I have no home! She has billions! The judge has to award me alimony!"

"The prenup contains an explicit infidelity and financial misconduct clause," David explained flatly. "By committing grand larceny against her trust, you breached the terms of the agreement, waiving all rights to spousal support, legal fee coverage, or asset division."

"And custody?!" Daniel pleaded, his voice breaking into a ragged sob. "Noah is my son! She can't keep my son from me!"

David looked at Daniel with deep, professional sympathy, but his words offered no mercy.

"Victoria’s legal team filed for sole legal and physical custody last week," David said quietly. "They attached psychological evaluation reports, records of your financial instability, and sworn affidavits from household staff detailing your verbal hostility toward Victoria in front of the child. Given your pending felony charges, the family court judge has already granted a temporary restraining order. You will be permitted supervised visitation once a month... provided you are not incarcerated."

Daniel dropped his head onto the metal table, sobbing uncontrollably. The cold iron of the table pressed against his forehead, reminding him of every mistake, every arrogant choice, every moment he had chosen his mother’s toxic pride over his wife’s loyalty.

"Is there... is there anything I can do?" Daniel wept, his shoulders shaking violently. "Anything at all?"

David closed his folder, standing up from his chair.

"My advice?" David said softly. "Plead guilty to the wire fraud. Cooperate with the prosecution to return any remaining funds. And pray that Victoria Vance decides not to pursue civil damages against your mother and sister."
