Chapter 6 - Exposing the Fraud

By Friday evening, the story reached its grand, public climax at the annual Metropolitan Business Leadership Gala—the most prestigious event on the city’s social calendar.

For months, Daniel had been scheduled to receive the "Venture Leader of the Year" award for his supposed turnaround of Hale Capital. The gala was held in the grand ballroom of the St. Regis Hotel, attended by five hundred of the state’s most influential politicians, corporate titans, and media moguls.

Daniel had refused to pull out of the event.

In his twisted, desperate mind, stepping onto that stage and accepting that award was his last remaining lifeline—a public endorsement that could force the Vance family to settle out of court and restore his social standing.

He had spent his last remaining funds renting a tailored tuxedo, styling his hair, and bribing a junior event organizer to keep his name on the program.

At 8:00 PM, Daniel walked into the grand ballroom, holding his chin high, forcing a confident, million-dollar smile onto his pale face.

The ballroom was magnificent, filled with glittering crystal chandeliers, white orchid displays, and the soft strains of a live string quartet. But as Daniel walked through the tables, the atmosphere shifted instantly.

Whispers broke out like dry leaves in the wind. "Is that Daniel Hale?" "What is he doing here?" "Did you hear about the embezzlement charges?" "I heard he was living on his wife's trust fund the whole time..."

Daniel ignored the stares, fixing his eyes on the head table near the stage.

And then, his heart dropped into his stomach.

Sitting at the center of the head table was not his empty seat, but me.

I wore a floor-length dark emerald silk gown, adorned with a diamond necklace from my mother’s private collection. Beside me sat my father, Marcus Vance, alongside the Governor and the Chief Justice of the State Supreme Court. I was laughing softly at a remark made by the Governor, radiant, calm, and completely in control of the room.

Daniel’s blood burned with a toxic mix of humiliation and desperate rage. He strode toward the head table, ignoring the warning glances from event security.

"Victoria," Daniel said loudly, stopping five feet from my chair.

The conversation at the head table instantly ceased. The Governor looked up in surprise. The Chief Justice raised an eyebrow.

I turned my head slowly, taking a delicate sip of my sparkling water before looking at him. "Good evening, Daniel."

"You couldn't let me have even one night, could you?" Daniel rasped, his voice trembling under the strain of suppressed hysteria. "You had to come here and sit at the head table. You had to make sure everyone saw you holding the court."

"Daniel," my father said, standing up smoothly, his imposing presence taking over the space. "You are causing a scene. Walk away."

"No, Marcus! I won't walk away!" Daniel shouted, drawing the attention of half the ballroom. "I spent five years building Hale Capital! I put my name on that firm! I gave this city five years of my life! And you two stripped it away from me overnight over a personal argument!"

I stood up from my chair, my emerald dress sweeping gracefully against the floor. The entire ballroom had gone completely silent, five hundred guests watching the drama unfold.

"You didn't build Hale Capital, Daniel," I said, my voice carrying clearly through the silent hall without needing a microphone. "You managed an entity that was capitalized by my family. And you didn't give this city five years of your life—you spent five years using corporate funds to cover your family's personal debts."

"That's a lie!" Daniel yelled, pointing a shaking finger at me. "I was voted Leader of the Year by the Commerce Board!"

"The Commerce Board voted based on financial statements that you falsified, Daniel," a stern voice boomed from the stage microphone.

Everyone turned to look at the stage.

Thomas Wright, the Chief Risk Officer, was standing at the podium holding a microphone and a stack of official court documents.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Thomas announced to the entire ballroom. "In light of recent developments and an ongoing law enforcement investigation, the Commerce Board formally rescinds tonight’s Venture Leader of the Year award. Furthermore, we are presenting the State Prosecutor's Office with full records of Mr. Hale's unauthorized activities."

Two plainclothes detectives stepped out from the side doors of the ballroom, walking steadily toward Daniel.

Daniel looked around the room in absolute, horrified terror. He saw the cold, disgusted faces of his former peers. He saw the cameras of society reporters flashing in his face, capturing every second of his disgrace. He saw his fragile, fake world shattering into a million unrecoverable pieces.

"Daniel Hale," the lead detective said, holding up a badge and an arrest warrant. "You are under arrest for grand larceny, corporate fraud, and falsification of financial records. You have the right to remain silent."

As the detectives clicked the silver handcuffs around Daniel’s wrists in the middle of the St. Regis ballroom, he looked at me one last time.

His eyes were filled with an overwhelming, pathetic question: Why?

I didn't answer him with words. I simply adjusted the diamond necklace on my neck—the necklace paid for by my own family—and sat back down beside the Governor, turning my attention back to my drink.
