Chapter 8 - Shadow Guardians

Three months passed.

The sign above the restaurant was officially changed. Sterling’s Bistro was gone. In its place stood a warm, glowing neon sign: Rory’s Kitchen.

Under Mara’s management, the restaurant was transformed. The toxic, stressful environment vanished, replaced by a bustling, cheerful atmosphere where every worker was paid fairly and treated with respect. The food was better, the service was glowing, and neighborhood locals flooded through the doors every single night.

Mara sat in the comfortable office in the back, going over the monthly revenue sheets. Her heart swelled with pride. For the first time in her life, she had a savings account, healthcare for her daughter, and absolute security.

Outside in the main dining room, four-year-old Rory sat at her favorite booth near the window, coloring in a new drawing book.

Standing quietly near the front entrance, wearing sharp black suits, were two of Vincent Kane’s men—Leo and a burly enforcer named Marco.

They weren't there to collect protection money. They were there as a permanent security detail ordered by Kane himself.

"Hey, Leo!" Rory called out, waving her green crayon. "Look! I drew a dinosaur!"

Leo, a man who had spent fifteen years terrifying street gangs across Illinois, walked over with a soft smile on his face. He leaned over the booth, examining the drawing with absolute seriousness.

"That's a very fine dinosaur, Rory," Leo said in his low voice. "Is it a friendly one?"

"Yeah! He eats bad guys!" Rory giggled.

Marco chuckled from the door. "If the Boss saw you playing art critic, Leo, he’d never let you hear the end of it."

"The Boss sent us here to protect the asset," Leo said, straightening his tie with a smirk. "And right now, Rory is the most important asset in the city."

Every afternoon at exactly 4:00 PM, a long black luxury sedan pulled up to the curb outside Rory’s Kitchen.

Vincent Kane would step out, walk inside, and sit at Rory’s booth. He didn't ask for alcohol or special treatment. He ordered a simple cup of coffee and listened intently as a four-and-a-half-year-old girl explained her daily adventures at pre-school.
