Chapter 6 - Unmasking the Parasite

By midnight, the news of what had happened at Sterling’s Bistro had spread through the Chicago underworld like wildfire.

In a private cigar lounge five miles away, two rival syndicate captains were discussing the event in hushed, incredulous tones.

"Did you hear?" one asked, blowing a cloud of blue smoke. "Vincent Kane shut down Sterling’s place tonight."

"Why? Did Sterling miss a cut?"

"No," the other replied, shaking his head in disbelief. "A four-year-old kid walked into Kane’s private room with a piece of paper. Sterling was withholding wages from a single mother."

"You’re kidding. Kane blew up a million-dollar operation over five grand in stolen wages?"

"Kane didn't just blow it up," the captain whispered. "He audited Sterling's books right after. Turns out Sterling was skimming off Kane’s cut too, hiding profits under fake vendor receipts while telling his kitchen staff he didn't have money to pay them."

While the rumors spread, Vincent Kane’s accountants were working through the night inside the offices of Sterling's Bistro. What they found was far worse than anyone expected.

Sterling hadn't just stolen from Mara. He had been stealing from all fourteen employees—the dishwashers, the line cooks, the busboys, and the cleaning crew. He used illegal wage deduction schemes, pocketed their tips, and threatened to call immigration or police whenever anyone complained.

At 8:30 AM the next morning, Sterling arrived at his restaurant, bleary-eyed, wearing a rumpled suit, carrying a heavy metallic briefcase filled with $50,000 in cash. He hoped that paying the fine would allow him to keep his restaurant.

When he pushed open the front doors, he found Vincent Kane sitting at the center table, sipping black coffee. Beside him was an elderly man in a sharp suit holding a stack of legal documents.

"I have the money!" Sterling declared nervously, setting the briefcase on the table. "Fifty thousand! Cash! Now give me back my lease!"

Kane didn't touch the briefcase. He motioned to the lawyer beside him.

"This is Mr. Vance, my head corporate counsel," Kane said calmly. "Overnight, Mr. Vance reviewed your official tax filings and internal ledgers. You owe your fourteen staff members a combined total of two hundred and twelve thousand dollars in stolen wages over the last three years."

Sterling's jaw dropped. "That’s... that’s a lie!"

"It’s not a lie," Mr. Vance said smoothly, sliding a thick ledger across the table. "And if we hand these documents over to the federal Department of Labor and the IRS, you won't just be broke, Mr. Sterling. You will spend the next fifteen years in a federal penitentiary for tax fraud and wage theft."

Sterling fell back into a chair, his face completely drained of color. "What... what do you want from me?"

Kane leaned forward, resting his elbows on the table.

"You are going to sign over the ownership of this restaurant, the equipment, and the business license," Kane said coldly. "In exchange, I won't hand these ledgers to the IRS."

"Sign over the restaurant?!" Sterling gasped, tears of panic brimming in his eyes. "To who?!"

Kane looked toward the kitchen doors as Mara walked out, wearing clean clothes, looking rested for the first time in years.

"To your new landlord," Kane said.
