Chapter 5 - The Prenup’s Deadly Secret

Richard Harrington tried to regain control of his slipping reality.

He stepped around the head table, smoothing his tailored suit jacket, his professional negotiator’s smile forced onto his lips. “Now, see here, Lord Henrik—or Chancellor, whatever your title is. This is all a massive misunderstanding! The Harringtons have deep respect for European sovereignty. If Clara... excuse me, Her Highness... had simply informed us of her lineage, we would have organized an entirely different celebration! A royal gala!”

“You didn’t need a gala, Richard,” Clara said, stepping down from the dais. Baron Henrik instantly fell into place two paces behind her left shoulder. “You needed a prenup.”

Richard’s smile faltered.

At the edge of the dais, Preston Vale—the Harringtons’ chief legal counsel—looked like he wanted to dissolve into the carpet.

“Ah,” Preston Vale stammered, holding his leather briefcase like a shield. “The... the premarital agreement signed last night at Le Bernardin. Under New York State law, a signed contract regarding asset separation is legally binding, regardless of sovereign status—”

Baron Henrik let out a short, dry laugh that cut Preston Vale off like an iron gate slamming shut.

“Mr. Vale, is it?” Henrik asked, gesturing to the young military officer.

The officer produced a leather portfolio and opened it.

“You are referring to the document in which the Harrington Family Trust attempted to strip Her Serene Highness of all spousal claims, force her resignation from her museum duties, and demand indemnification against any 'financial embarrassment' brought upon the Harrington name?” Henrik asked, his tone dangerously light.

“It... it was standard asset protection!” Vale insisted, sweating through his collar.

“It was an act of economic warfare against a sovereign state,” Henrik corrected him instantly.

He pulled a document from the portfolio. “What you failed to research, Mr. Vale—because you assumed Her Highness was an orphan with no legal counsel—is that the land beneath the Harrington Global Flagship Tower on Park Avenue does not belong to the City of New York. It sits on a ninety-nine-year sovereign land lease granted in nineteen twenty-seven to the Valmont Banking Syndicate.”

Richard Harrington’s face went entirely white. The color drained out of his skin so fast he looked like a corpse standing in a tuxedo.

“What?” Richard choked out. “That land is owned by a Dutch holding company!”

“A Dutch holding company wholly owned by the Grand Duchy of Mont-Valen,” Henrik said smoothly. “Furthermore, Section Four of the prenup you forced Her Highness to sign states—and I quote—'Any personal property, debts, or sovereign interests held prior to the marriage shall remain exclusively under the jurisdiction of the originating party’s private trust.'”

Henrik smiled a cold, razor-sharp smile.

“By forcing Her Highness to sign your little document, Mr. Harrington, you legally certified that her sovereign trust remains completely separate from Harrington Global. Which means we are under no legal obligation to renew your commercial land lease when it expires... at midnight tonight.”

A collective gasp swept through the room. Several high-profile investors sitting in the front rows—men who owned tens of millions of dollars in Harrington Global stock—instantly pulled out their phones.

“Midnight?” Richard gasped, stumbling backward. “The lease... the lease isn't up until twenty-thirty!”

“It was subject to a twenty-year discretionary review clause held by the Sovereign Duchess upon her twenty-fifth birthday,” Henrik replied coldly. “Her Highness reached her twenty-fifth birthday fifty-four minutes ago.”

Richard turned to his son with pure, unadulterated fury. “Arthur! Do something! Talk to your wife!”

Arthur fell to his knees in front of Clara, grabbing the hem of her silk slip dress. “Clara! Please! I love you! You know I love you! My mother made me do it! It was all my mother’s idea!”

Eleanor gasped in horror. “Arthur! How dare you!”

May you like

Clara looked down at the man begging on the floor at her feet.

“You traded my dignity for your allowance, Arthur,” she said softly. “Now you can keep the allowance. If there’s any of it left tomorrow.”
