Chapter 3 - The Gilded Fortress

consciousness didn't come all at once. It returned in painful, disjointed fragments: the steady hum of air conditioning, the smell of costly sandalwood, and a deep, grinding ache in my chest that made breathing feel like swallowing broken glass.

I opened my eyes.

I wasn't in a hospital ward. The ceiling above me was covered in carved white molding. Soft afternoon light poured through massive arched windows draped in heavy cream velvet. I was lying in a king-sized bed wrapped in Egyptian cotton, hooked to a quiet, state-of-the-art IV pole.

I tried to sit up, but a sharp spike of agony tore through my ribs, forcing a small gasp from my throat.

"Don't move," a deep, dark voice commanded from the shadows across the room.

My head snapped toward the corner. Sitting in a leather wingback chair was the man from the hotel—Dominic Rossi. He had changed into a dark tailored suit, his dark hair combed back, his dark eyes watching me with an intensity that made my heart hammer against my bandaged chest.

I looked down at my hands. On the third finger of my left hand sat a thick, heavy gold ring that caught the sunlight.

"What... what is this?" My voice sounded like gravel, dry and cracked. "Where am I? Where is my mother?"

Dominic stood up, his broad shoulders blocking out the light as he walked slowly to the side of my bed. He didn't look like a stranger anymore; he looked like a sovereign taking inventory of his property.

"You are at the Rossi estate in Old Westbury," he said calmly. "You were shot seven times saving my mother’s life. You spent four days in medically induced coma at St. Catherine’s, and two days in transit to my home."

Memories hit me like a avalanche—the crystal crashing, the gunman’s cold eyes, throwing my body over Isabella, the terrifying thunder of bullets tearing through my ribs.

"My mother... Ellen..." I panicked, trying to reach for the IV line. "She’s in Cleveland... she needs her treatments... I missed my shift..."

Dominic reached out, his big, warm hand gently but firmly catching my wrist, stopping me from pulling the wires out. His grip was feather-light despite his size.

"Your mother is safe," Dominic said softly, looking down into my eyes. "Two days ago, my private medical jet flew Ellen Vance from the municipal center in Cleveland to the Cleveland Clinic’s private cardiac wing. The top chief of cardiology in North America performed her heart valve repair yesterday morning. The surgery was a complete success. All her medical debts have been paid in full."

I stared at him, tears welling in my eyes. "You... you paid for her surgery?"

"I don't leave debts unpaid," Dominic replied simply. "You took seven bullets for my mother. Paying off a medical bill is nothing."

"Then why..." I lifted my left hand, the heavy gold ring shining between us. "Why am I wearing this?"

Dominic’s expression hardened, his eyes turning to dark ice.

"Because the man who sent that gunman—Victor Costa—realized you survived. In my world, witnesses don't live long enough to testify. If you were just Clara Vance, a catering waitress from Queens, Costa’s hitmen would have suffocated you with a pillow in the ICU within twenty-four hours."

He leaned down, placing both hands on the mattress on either side of my shoulders, bringing his dangerous, handsome face inches from mine.

"So while you were unconscious, I had a priest enter room 402. You are legally, boundlessly, and publicly Mrs. Clara Rossi. You are the wife of the head of the Rossi family. In this city, touching a Rossi wife means an immediate declaration of total war. You are off-limits to every gun in North America."

My breath caught in my throat. The sheer absurdity and power of his words swirled around me.

"We don't even know each other," I whispered, terrified by how close he was, yet strangely anchored by his solid presence.

Dominic looked at me, his gaze dropping to my mouth for a fraction of a second before returning to my eyes. A dark, unreadable shadow passed across his features.

"You know enough," Dominic murmured softly. "You know I keep my promises."
