Chapter 5 - The Hospital Trail

The morning light broke over Boston Harbor, pale and bruised through the slate-gray clouds, offering no warmth to the frozen city below.
In the high-security executive suite of Massachusetts General Hospital, Dr. Harrison’s sealed envelope sat on the mahogany desk in Edward’s private office. Edward had not slept. He sat in his leather chair, the glow of his computer monitor illuminating the severe lines of his face, staring at a single line of digital text transmitted securely from the lab:
Paternity Probability: 99.99%. Biological Father: Edward Drummond.
The baby wasn't his nephew. He was his son—born of a surrogate or a hidden liaison orchestrated decades ago by his father, or perhaps a bloodline continuation that Edward’s father had secretly arranged before cutting off the branch of the family tree that led to Sophia’s mother.
The door opened quietly, and Calvin stepped inside, carrying a damp trench coat and a manila file folder stamped with police seals.
“We interrogated the lead merc from last night,” Calvin reported without preamble. “He didn't break easily, but when I mentioned federal kidnapping charges and corporate rackotherapy, he gave up his handler.”
Edward looked up. “Name.”
“Marcus Vance. Arthur Cole’s chief of security,” Calvin said, tossing the file onto the desk. “Cole didn't just want to ruin your stock price. He found out about the hidden trust fund attached to the west wing three weeks ago. When your sister—Elena Drummond—disappeared twenty-five years ago, she didn't just walk away. She left behind a legal claim to fifty percent of the commercial waterfront properties in Boston. Properties that Arthur Cole spent the last decade acquiring through shell companies.”
Edward stood up slowly. The pieces of the puzzle clicked together with terrifying clarity.
“Elena,” Edward whispered, tasting his sister’s name for the first time in his adult life. “She didn't just run away. My father hunted her. And when she died... her daughter—Sophia’s mother—was left unprotected.”
“Worse than that, Mr. Drummond,” Calvin added grimly. “Sophia’s grandmother—your sister’s foster mother, the woman who raised her—is currently admitted in the intensive care unit here at Mass General. And according to my contacts on the hospital board, someone tried to sign a forced DNR and transfer order for her at 2:00 AM while the mercenaries were storming your house.”

Edward grabbed his overcoat from the back of the chair.
“Get the armored sedan,” Edward said, his voice dropping into a register that made Calvin step back respectfully. “We’re going to the hospital.”
