Chapter 7 - The Viper in the Suite

The air in the hallway seemed to vanish.

Maria watched in stunned silence as the most powerful man in the building—a man who owned skyscrapers, newspapers, and politicians—stared at the carpet with a look of such absolute, crushing devastation that it made her own heart ache for him.

The Iceberg was melting, and beneath the ice was only a terrified, grieving boy who had lost his family a decade ago.

“Eleven years,” Ethan whispered, his voice cracking with a raw, ugly sound. “Eleven years... and I let him run the company.”

“Mr. Harrington?” Maria asked softly, forgetting for a moment that she was a maid and he was her employer. The instinct of a mother, of someone who knew what it meant to be lied to and betrayed, took over. “Are you alright?”

Before Ethan could answer, the sharp click of high heels echoed down the executive corridor.

“Ethan?”

Victoria Vance rounded the corner, her expression a mix of professional annoyance and icy curiosity. Her eyes swept over the scene: the billionaire sitting on the dusty floor of the service alcove, the yellow envelope scattered with old paper, and a terrified housekeeping employee kneeling with a three-year-old child.

Victoria’s gaze hardened instantly.

“What is the meaning of this?” Victoria demanded, her voice cutting through the quiet like a scalpel. She stepped closer, her eyes fixing on Maria. “You trespass on the executive floor, contaminate the private corridors with unauthorized personnel, and disrupt the CEO during market hours? Security!”

“Stop, Victoria,” Ethan said.

His voice was quiet. Dangerously quiet.

Victoria paused, blinking in surprise. She looked down at Ethan, expecting him to issue the order for Maria’s immediate arrest and termination, as he had done a dozen times before with minor infractions.

Instead, Ethan slowly stood up. He didn't brush off his suit pants. He didn't look at his watch. He simply looked at Victoria with eyes that had gone completely cold, stripped of all corporate polish.

“Mr. Harrington, the board conference call is starting in three minutes,” Victoria said, her tone sharpening with a hint of warning. “We don't have time for housekeeping drama. Let security handle the trespasser.”

“It’s funny, Victoria,” Ethan said, taking a slow step toward her. “For eleven years, you’ve managed my schedule, filtered my calls, and reminded me of every single SEC regulation on the books.”

“Naturally. It’s my job.”

“Is it?” Ethan reached down, picked up the pressed photograph of Clara standing in front of the Indiana farmhouse, and held it out between two fingers. “Did your husband—my dear partner Julian—ever mention where he got the authority to sign Clara’s name off the board registry back in 2015?”

Victoria’s face lost every trace of color. The cool, impenetrable facade cracked instantly, revealing a flash of sheer panic before she quickly tried to mask it behind an arrogant smirk.

“You’re having a medical episode, Ethan,” Victoria said, her voice rising slightly as she backed away toward the main elevator bank. “The stress of the Q3 earnings has finally broken your judgment. Security! Get up here right now!”
