Chapter 4 - The Net Tightens

The following afternoon, the preliminary forensic results returned from the state crime laboratory, delivering a crushing blow to Vanessa’s legal defense.

The trace analysis confirmed that the tiny glass shards found tucked inside Vanessa's hidden velvet pouch matched the exact atomic composition of the imported Italian green crystal vase Rachel had owned. Furthermore, advanced luminol testing on the crimson dress revealed micro-splatters of blood that matched Rachel’s DNA profile—DNA that had been preserved beneath a layer of protective dry-cleaning wax Vanessa had foolishly thought would hide her crime forever.

In Interrogation Room B at the precinct, Vanessa sat alongside her high-priced criminal defense lawyer, Arthur Sterling. Sterling had initially taken a belligerent stance, threatening to sue the department for unlawful arrest and defamation.

Detective Miller walked into the room, setting a thick manila folder onto the metal table with a deliberate thud. Daniel sat quietly in the observation room behind the two-way mirror, watching every movement.

"Mr. Sterling," Miller began, leaning back in his chair, "you might want to advise your client to review these before she enters any formal plea at tomorrow's arraignment."

Miller opened the folder, spreading high-resolution crime scene photographs across the stainless-steel table: the red dress, the DNA match reports, the glass analysis, and a recorded transcript of Noah’s formal forensic interview.

"Sixteen months ago, you staged Rachel Vance’s death as an accidental fall," Miller stated coldly, pointing a finger directly at Vanessa. "You cleaned up the shattered glass, stole her wedding ring to make it look like a domestic dispute or burglary gone wrong, and then spent the next year manipulating and physically abusing two young children to maintain their silence."

Vanessa’s lawyer looked down at the forensic documents, his confident demeanor vanishing instantly. He leaned over and whispered frantically into Vanessa’s ear.

Vanessa’s face contorted with cold, unyielding hatred. "That little boy is a liar!" she spat, slamming her hands on the table. "He’s traumatized and mentally unstable! Daniel was neglected them, and I was the one who kept that house together!"

"We also recovered your computer hard drive, Vanessa," Miller added smoothly, pulling out a secondary printout. "We found search records from three weeks prior to Rachel's death: 'How to break a neck in a domestic fall,' 'Invisible poisons,' and 'Probate law for surviving spouses.' You had been stalking Daniel and Rachel for months before you ever 'accidentally' met him at that coffee shop."

Vanessa froze, realization dawning upon her that her carefully constructed web of lies had completely unravelled.

Sterling sighed heavily, pulling his briefcase onto his lap. He looked at his client with cold detachment. "Vanessa... we need to discuss a plea deal immediately to take the death penalty off the table."

Behind the two-way mirror, Daniel closed his eyes and let out a long, shuddering breath. The battle was far from over, but the shadows that had haunted his family were finally being driven out by the blinding light of the truth.
