Chapter 6 - Confessions in the Salt Air

Midnight on the open ocean was a lonely, magnificent thing.

Far above the glittering lights of the Grand Ballroom, out on the secluded starboard wing of the captain’s private observation deck, the wind tore at the hem of Lena’s emerald gown. The salt spray stung her cheeks, but she barely felt it. Her fingers gripped the cold brass railing as she stared out into the vast, dark horizon where the sea met the starry sky.

Footsteps crunched softly on the teak decking behind her.

A heavy, warm cashmere coat settled over her shoulders, smelling faintly of cedarwood and expensive tobacco.

“You’ll catch pneumonia,” Matteo said quietly, leaning against the railing beside her. He wasn't wearing his suit jacket; his white shirt was unbuttoned at the collar, his sleeves rolled up to his forearms.

“I grew up in Queens, Mr. Romano,” Lena replied without looking at him, though she pulled the coat tighter around herself. “A little sea breeze isn't going to kill me. Though I can't say the same for your bride's blood pressure.”

Matteo let out a short, dry laugh. “Vivien hasn't stopped hyperventilating since you walked into the ballroom. Her father tried to corner me twice during dinner, demanding you be removed from the ship before we dock in Southampton.”

“And what did you tell him?”

“I told him that if he or his daughter so much as looked at you sideways again, I would personally feed their shipping ledgers to the sharks and let the federal prosecutors sort out what’s left of their empire.”

Lena finally turned her head, looking up at him through the dim light of the deck lamps. “You’re playing a very dangerous game, Matteo. You’re using me as a pawn to provoke them.”

“You’re not a pawn, Lena,” Matteo said, turning to face her fully. His dark eyes caught the starlight, burning with an intensity that made her breath catch. “You’re the only person on this ship who isn’t wearing a mask. When I looked at you kneeling on that broken glass two nights ago, covered in cleaning solution while vultures stood around recording you on their phones... I didn't see a maid. I saw the only person strong enough to help me burn this corrupt empire to the ground.”

“And after it burns?” Lena whispered, her voice barely audible over the rush of the wind. “What happens to us then?”

Matteo didn’t answer with words. He reached out, his warm calloused fingers gently cupping the side of her face, his thumb brushing across her cheekbone. The distance between them vanished until she could feel the heat radiating off his chest.

When his lips met hers, it wasn't the hesitant kiss of two cautious allies; it was a collision of suppressed grief, shared vengeance, and an undeniable, electric hunger that had been building since the moment he asked her name in the hallway.

Lena’s hands slid up his chest, gripping the lapels of his shirt as she kissed him back with a fierce, answering desperation. For a few stolen seconds, the ship, the wedding, the murder of their fathers, and the glittering world of billionaires and thieves ceased to exist.

There was only the salt air, the dark ocean, and the unmistakable certainty that nothing would ever be the same again.
