Chapter 9 - The Ring in the Ashes
For ten seconds, no one moved.
Three hundred wealthy guests stood frozen like statues in a museum of shattered illusions. They looked at Nathaniel, who still held little Lily safely against his chest, and then at Elena, who stood frozen near the ruined cake, her hands trembling.
Nathaniel didn't address the crowd. He didn't offer an apology, an explanation, or a toast.
He simply looked down at his left hand, where a heavy, platinum-and-diamond engagement ring—worth more than most houses in Queens—sat on his ring finger.
With a slow, deliberate motion, Nathaniel slid the ring off his finger.
He walked over to the ruined porcelain doll scattered across the marble floor. Kneeling down amidst the broken white shards and the torn stuffing of the handmade rabbit, he placed Victoria’s engagement ring right in the center of the wreckage, resting it delicately on top of a piece of the shattered porcelain head.
Then he stood up, turned his back on the entire room of elites, and walked back toward Elena and Lily.
“The party is over,” Nathaniel announced to the silent ballroom, his voice echoing with absolute finality. “Goodnight, everyone.”
Without waiting for a response, without caring who whispered what behind his back, Nathaniel took Elena gently by the elbow with his free hand.
“Come on, Elena,” he said softly, the harsh winter storm in his eyes completely melted away into something warm, steady, and terrifyingly real. “Let’s take Lily back to the nursery. There’s one more gift she hasn't opened yet.”

Elena could barely breathe. Her legs felt like water. She allowed herself to be guided away from the staring crowd, walking behind Nathaniel through the silk drapes, away from the glittering lights of the ballroom, and down the quiet, carpeted corridors of the family wing.
Behind them, the three hundred witnesses began to murmur like a disturbed beehive, but their voices faded into nothingness as the heavy doors closed behind the three of them.
