Chapter 6 - The Light Returns

By afternoon, the storm that had hovered over Michael Hartman’s life for six long months had finally begun to break.
Inside the mansion’s sunny second-floor sitting room, a small sewing table had been set up near the window.
Lily sat on a footstool, her eyes round with wonder as Michael sat across from her with a small bone needle and a spool of gold silk thread. With extreme patience and surprising skill, Michael was hand-stitching a new arm onto Rosie the cloth doll, using a soft piece of velvet taken from one of Emily’s old sample books.
"Where did you learn to sew?" Lily asked softly, her small toes wiggling on the thick Persian rug.
Michael smiled—a real, genuine smile that reached his eyes for the first time since May.
"Your mother taught me," Michael said, carefully tying a knot at the doll's shoulder seam. "When we were first married, she tried to teach me how to make quilts. I was terrible at it. I kept sewing my own sleeves to the cushions. She used to laugh at me until she cried."
Lily looked up at the large oil painting hanging above the fireplace—a portrait of Emily wearing a soft blue dress, sitting in a field of sunflowers.
"She looks like an angel," Lily whispered.
"She was," Michael said gently, cutting the thread with a small pair of silver scissors. "And she loved you more than anything in this world, Lily. She searched for you every single day."
He handed Rosie back to her. The doll was complete once more, her new velvet arm sturdy and soft to the touch.
Lily held the doll against her chest, then slowly stood up and walked over to Michael. She didn't hesitate this time. She climbed onto his lap, wrapped her thin arms around his neck, and buried her face into the shoulder of his suit jacket.
Michael stiffened in shock for a fraction of a second, his heart hammering against his ribs, before he folded his large arms around her small body, holding her close as if she were the most precious treasure on earth.
"Thank you, Daddy Michael," she whispered against his collar.
The word Daddy hit Michael’s soul with the force of a tidal wave. All the pain, all the grief, all the empty nights spent weeping beneath the cottonwood tree washed away, replaced by an overwhelming, roaring ocean of love.
The library door opened quietly. James Sterling stepped inside, carrying a signed document from the family court.
"The emergency hearing is set for tomorrow morning at nine," Sterling reported smoothly, looking at the sight of the child resting in Michael’s arms. "Richard Vance’s attorneys tried to file for temporary custody, but the District Attorney just executed a search warrant on Mrs. Gable’s group home. They found financial ledgers proving Richard paid her ten thousand dollars a month to keep Lily hidden under a false name."
Michael rested his chin on top of Lily’s braided hair. "And the criminal charges?"
"Grand theft, child endangerment, conspiracy, and extortion," Sterling listed with satisfaction. "Richard Vance will be in a holding cell until his bail hearing, which we intend to contest fully. The state custody board has already cleared the path for your immediate, permanent adoption of Lily."
Lily lifted her head from Michael’s shoulder, looking nervously at the lawyer. "Does that mean I don't have to go back to the group house?"
May you like
Michael smoothed a stray strand of hair behind her ear, his voice soft as silk and strong as iron.
"You are never leaving this house, Lily," he promised. "This is your home now."
