Chapter 7 - The Reckoning

The aftermath of the gala swept through the media like a hurricane.

By Monday morning, front-page headlines across the country exposed the dramatic downfall of Vivienne Cross and Arthur Pendelton. State prosecutors filed a slate of heavy felony charges against Vivienne, including attempted child endangerment, grand corporate fraud, wiretapping, and unlawful confinement.

With Arthur Pendelton facing federal prison time, the board of directors unanimously voted to clear Elena Mercer of any wrongdoing, issuing a public apology to the family for allowing corporate oversight to be manipulated.

Inside the quiet sanctuary of the Mercer estate, the dark clouds that had hung over the home for months were finally lifted.

The house was filled with sunlight. The shattered flower arrangements had been replaced with fresh yellow roses.

In the sunlit living room, Tessa Monroe was sitting on the plush rug, playing with wooden building blocks alongside little Leo. Leo was healthy, vibrant, and laughing happily, his cheeks rosy and full of life.

Grant and Elena walked into the room hand-in-hand, carrying a thick binder of legal documents.

"Tessa," Elena said gently, sitting down beside her on the rug. "We need to talk to you."

Tessa looked up, a hint of nervousness returning to her eyes. "Is everything okay, Mrs. Mercer?"

"Everything is perfect," Grant said, sitting on the sofa above them. "Our legal team has spent the last forty-eight hours finalizing our estate restructuring."

Elena reached out and placed a signed contract into Tessa’s hands. "We know you were hired as a temporary nanny through an agency. But after what you did for our family—after standing up to Vivienne when no one else was there to see it—we want to offer you a permanent position."

Tessa opened the folder. Inside was a contract appointing her as the Director of Child Welfare and Security for the Mercer Family Foundation, accompanied by a generous salary, full executive benefits, and a private residential home located on the estate grounds.

Tessa stared at the papers, her eyes welling with tears. "I... I don't know what to say. Mr. Mercer, Mrs. Mercer... I just did what any decent person would do."

"No," Grant said softly. "You saved my son's life. You saw through a web of lies when I was too blind to see it. You will always have a home with us, Tessa."

Leo tumbled over into Tessa’s lap, holding up a bright red block. "Tessa play!" he giggled.

Tessa wiped a tear from her cheek and smiled warmly, pulling the little boy into a soft hug. "I'd love to, Leo."
