Chapter 7 - The Media Storm

By four o’clock that afternoon, the legal defeat of the corporate receiver had leaked to the financial press. By six o’clock, downtown Chicago’s media outlets were in a feeding frenzy.

“WHIFFIELD EMPIRE ROCKS: BILLIONAIRE DANIEL WHITFIELD DISCOVERS HISTORICAL TRUST FRAUD; ENGAGEMENT TO VANESSA COLE OFFICIALLY ANNULLED AMID LEGAL SCANDAL.”

The headlines flashed across news tickers in Times Square, echoed on cable financial networks, and dominated social media feeds across the country.

Inside the Cole Tower penthouse, Arthur Cole stared at his television screen in absolute disbelief. The stock price of Cole Enterprises was plunging as institutional investors panicked over the sudden unravelling of the joint venture.

Vanessa Cole sat on the edge of a velvet chair, her phone gripped so hard her knuckles were white. Her social media accounts, usually flooded with flattering comments from high-society sycophants, were now overwhelmed by public mockery, memes about kitchen scissors, and relentless questioning about her family's land dealings.

“He beat us,” Vanessa whispered, her voice cracking with hysterical rage. “Dad... the maid beat us. The maid’s family owned the land all along?”

“Not all of it,” Arthur growled, pacing the floor like a trapped animal. “They hold a historical equity claim in the original trust. But a trust can be challenged in court, delayed for years, drained through legal fees—!”

“No,” Vanessa interrupted, standing up, her eyes wild with a desperate, destructive plan. “Not through courts. Courts take too time. We destroy them publicly. We make it look like the Whitfield estate has become a haven for squatters and scandal. If we can’t have the estate, nobody will.”

She grabbed her designer handbag.

“Where are you going?” Arthur demanded.

“To Maple Ridge,” Vanessa hissed, a cruel smile twisting her lips. “I’m going to remind everyone whose world this really is.”
