Chapter 6 - The Checkmate

Margaret and Carla crowbarred the back door of the guest house, slipping inside the dark, luxurious room.

“Hurry up!” Margaret hissed, holding a flashlight. “Put the bag under the floor grate! When the feds search Austin’s property tomorrow, they’ll find the cash and the offshore routing numbers. He’ll go to prison, and I’ll get custody of the baby as the closest competent relative!”

Carla shoved the heavy duffel bag into the air conditioning vent. “Done! Let’s get out of here.”

They turned to leave.

CLICK.

The heavy reinforced smart-doors of the guest house locked electronically.

The lights in the room suddenly flickered on, blazing with blinding intensity.

A voice boomed through the intercom system mounted on the ceiling. It was my voice.

“Did you really think I wouldn't upgrade the security system after you attacked my wife?”

Margaret stared up at the camera in the corner, her face contorting with rage. “Austin! Open this door! Open it right now!”

“You shouldn't have brought the stolen money onto my property, Mom,” I replied calmly through the speaker. “Because now, you’re not just facing assault charges. You’re facing federal wire fraud, evidence tampering, and grand larceny.”

Before Margaret could scream another threat, the sound of heavy boots echoed outside the guest house.

The door was kicked open by federal agents wearing tactical vests that read FBI.

“Margaret and Carla Wentworth!” the lead agent shouted, weapons drawn. “Get on the ground! Now!”

Carla fell to her knees, sobbing hysterically, raising her hands. “It was her! It was my mom! She made me forge the documents! She made me hide the money! I’ll testify against her! I’ll tell you everything!”

Margaret stared at her daughter in absolute horror, realizing that the toxic, manipulative loyalty she had built her life upon had just shattered in a matter of seconds.

The feds dragged them out into the night, the flash of red and blue lights reflecting off the tears on Margaret’s face.

This time, there would be no bail.
