Chapter 6 - The Heir of Calvetti

The private medical wing of the Calvetti mansion was silent except for the soft monitor chimes.

Vincent sat on the edge of his bed, shirtless, a white bandage wrapped tightly around his left shoulder where Dr. Vance had removed two shotgun pellets. He looked tired, but the dark, restless shadow that had haunted his eyes for years seemed entirely gone.

Clara walked into the room carrying a tray with warm soup and a glass of water. She wore a simple gray cashmere sweater and dark jeans.

She set the tray on the bedside table and sat in the armchair beside him.

“Leo is asleep,” she said softly. “Samuel is sitting outside his door.”

“Thank you,” Vincent said. He looked down at his bandaged shoulder, then at his hands. “Clara... I owe you my life.”

Clara gave a small, wry smile. “Consider it payment for the transmission job on my Honda.”

Vincent didn't smile. He looked up at her, his expression deeply vulnerable—a look he had never allowed any living person to see.

“When the ambush happened six years ago,” Vincent said quietly, his voice low, “the doctor told me I was lucky to survive. But when I realized what the injuries meant... that I could never father a child... I felt like half a man. I thought my family’s story ended with me.”

He reached out, his warm, calloused fingers taking her small hand.

“I married you for a contract, Clara. I wanted an heir to stop the war. But tonight... when I saw you standing in the snow, protecting this house, protecting me... I realized something.”

Clara felt her breath catch in her throat. “What?”

“Blood doesn't make an heir,” Vincent said, his voice filled with an intense, quiet truth. “And blood doesn't make a family. Courage does. Loyalty does. You and Leo are more my family than anyone who shares my blood ever was.”

He reached into his bedside drawer and pulled out a leather folder. He opened it, revealing official court documents stamped by the State of Illinois.

It was a petition for full legal adoption and name change. Leo Jenkins was officially registered as Leo Calvetti—the sole, undisputed legal son and heir of Vincent Calvetti.

Clara looked down at the paper, tears welling up in her eyes. “Vincent...”

“He is my son now,” Vincent whispered. “No one will ever question his place. And no one will ever touch you again.”

Clara looked up from the document into Vincent’s dark, intense eyes. She saw no mob boss, no Baron Butcher, no terrifying figure of the underworld. She saw a man who had been broken by violence, who had built an armor of cold authority around his heart, and who had opened his doors to save her when no one else would.

She leaned forward.

She placed her hands gently on either side of his sharp jawline and brought her lips down to his.

The kiss was slow, deep, and filled with months of built-up longing, respect, and unspoken love. Vincent let out a low breath against her mouth, his good arm coming around her waist, pulling her flush against his chest, anchoring her to him as if she were the only solid thing in a shifting world.

When she finally pulled back, her cheeks were flushed, her breathing shallow.

“Contract clause update,” Clara whispered against his lips, a small, beautiful smile touching her mouth.

Vincent smiled back, his dark eyes glowing. “What clause?”

“The separate bedrooms,” Clara murmured. “I think we can cancel that one.”
