Chapter 5 - The Financial Reckoning

By 8:30 AM on Monday morning, the financial district of the city was buzzing with activity.

I stood in the glass-walled conference room on the forty-second floor of Apex Logistics Corporation—the multinational firm where Daniel served as Vice President of Regional Procurement.

Sitting across from me at the mahogany conference table were three men: Jonathan Sterling, the Chief Executive Officer; Sarah Lin, the Chief Legal Counsel; and two armed corporate security officers standing quietly near the door.

On the table sat my black briefcase, open, displaying a forty-page forensic audit of Daniel’s corporate spending logs.

"Miss Reed," Mr. Sterling said, rubbing his temples, his face pale with stress. "Are you absolutely certain of these figures?"

"Mr. Sterling, as a certified forensic accountant, my work is subject to federal audit standards," I replied calmly. "Over the past eighteen months, your Vice President of Procurement, Daniel Reed, created three fictitious vendor accounts under the umbrella of V&D Creative Solutions LLC. He approved twenty-two fraudulent invoices for 'logistics consulting' that were never performed."

Sarah Lin pulled the supporting wire-transfer logs toward her, her eyes scanning the routing numbers. "The total amount embezzled from Apex Logistics..."

"Four hundred and sixty-eight thousand dollars," I stated flatly. "The bulk of which was used to purchase high-end luxury goods, offshore vacation rentals, and a private lease on a Porsche Cayenne registered to my sister, Vanessa Reed."

Mr. Sterling leaned back in his leather chair, letting out a long, dark breath. "My God. He was stealing from us right under our noses."

"He relied on the fact that your internal auditors only perform spot checks on invoices under $25,000," I explained. "He kept every single fraudulent invoice at $24,500."

At that exact moment, the glass door of the conference room swung open.

Daniel walked in, holding a leather portfolio and a takeaway coffee cup. He was wearing his best navy charcoal suit, trying to look every bit the powerful executive.

"Good morning, Mr. Sterling! I have the Q3 procurement projections ready—"

Daniel stopped dead in his tracks.

His eyes locked onto me, sitting at the head of the conference table beside his CEO and Chief Legal Counsel. The coffee cup slipped from his fingers, crashing onto the carpet, spilling dark liquid across his polished leather shoes.

"Emma?" Daniel stammered, his voice dropping into a panicked squeak. "What... what are you doing here?"

"Sit down, Daniel," Mr. Sterling said, his voice cold as ice.

"Mr. Sterling, whatever she’s telling you, it’s a personal matter!" Daniel pleaded, stepping frantically toward the table, gesturing wildly. "We are going through a messy divorce! She’s trying to sabotage my career because she’s bitter about our separation!"

"Is this invoice for $24,500 dated August 12th a personal matter, Daniel?" Sarah Lin asked, sliding a document across the glass table. "The one paid to V&D Creative Solutions for 'supply chain optimization'—authorized by your private digital key?"

Daniel stared at the piece of paper. His chest heaved, sweat instantly breaking out across his forehead, ruining his carefully styled hair. "I... I can explain that. That was a legitimate vendor contract—"

"There is no V&D Creative Solutions office, Daniel," I cut in, looking up at him with a calm, unblinking glare. "It’s a shell company tied to a UPS store mailbox two blocks from my sister's apartment. The only 'supply chain' you optimized was the delivery of Cartier bracelets to Vanessa’s front door."

Daniel looked from me to his CEO, whose face was rigid with absolute fury.

"Daniel Reed," Mr. Sterling declared, standing up and buttoning his jacket. "You are hereby suspended effective immediately, pending formal termination. Security will escort you from the building. The board has already authorized full cooperation with the State Financial Crimes Division."

"Mr. Sterling, please!" Daniel fell to his knees beside the conference table, grabbing the edge of the mahogany wood. "I have a mortgage! I have legal fees! You can't do this to me!"

"You did this to yourself, Daniel," I whispered as the two corporate security officers stepped forward, grabbed Daniel by his arms, and hoisted him to his feet.

As they dragged him down the long glass hallway past dozens of staring coworkers, Daniel turned his head, screaming at me over his shoulder: "You're crazy, Emma! You're a cold-blooded bitch! You destroyed my life!"

May you like

I slowly picked up my coffee cup, took a quiet sip, and smiled.

"No, Daniel," I whispered to the empty air. "I just balanced the books."
