Chapter 4 - Frozen Assets

While I recovered in a quiet rehabilitation suite overlooking the Pacific Ocean, Harrison Vance’s legal team struck with the precision of a military drone strike.

Because the initial forensic audit had uncovered documented evidence of financial fraud, forgery, and embezzlement of a protected trust, Harrison bypassed civil court entirely and went straight to a federal judge.

On a rainy Thursday morning, my parents were hosting an exclusive, high-society brunch on the newly delivered yacht docked in Marina del Rey. Madison was posing for photos on the sun deck, holding a glass of champagne, basking in the envy of her wealthy friends who had come to admire her expensive new toy.

The party came to an abrupt, screeching halt when two federal marshals and three private process servers marched down the private dock, flanked by local harbor police.

According to eye-witness reports later compiled by Harrison’s investigators, my father had walked down the gangway, puffing out his chest and demanding to know what the intrusion was about.

The lead marshal didn't blink. He handed my father a thick stack of federal court orders.

All personal and corporate bank accounts frozen. All real estate assets placed under immediate receivership. The yacht—the crown jewel of Madison’s social status—impounded pending forfeiture proceedings.

“What is the meaning of this?!” my father had bellowed, his face turning the color of a bruised plum. “Do you know who I am? I am Richard Sinclair! I run a multi-million-dollar holding company!”

“Not anymore, Mr. Sinclair,” the marshal replied coolly. “Your assets have been frozen under suspicion of grand larceny, wire fraud, and trust embezzlement.”

Madison had reportedly dropped her champagne glass, the crystal shattering against the teak deck, before bursting into a hysterical, screaming fit that could be heard across three neighboring slips.

By noon, my phone—which had been silent for a week—began vibrating uncontrollably.

My father was calling.

I stared at the screen as the caller ID flashed Dad. I let it ring out. Then my mother called. Then Madison. Then text messages flooded in, shifting from angry demands to frantic pleading.

Dad: Emily, answer your phone right now. There’s been some insane mistake with the banks. Our accounts are frozen. They took the yacht!

Mom: Emily, please! Your father is having chest pains. Call us back immediately. We need your help!

Madison: EMILY! Did you do this?! Tell me you didn't do this! My friends are all looking at me! Unfreeze my cards right now or I swear to God I will ruin you!

I read the texts, deleted every single one without replying, and blocked their numbers.

The hunt had only just begun.
