Chapter 7 - The Arrest

At 10:15 a.m., the parking lot of the roadside motel off Highway 10 was filled with the flashing red and blue lights of six unmarked federal law enforcement vehicles.

Guests at the motel peered through their window blinds as eight heavily armed FBI agents, accompanied by officers from the IRS Criminal Investigation Division, marched down the exterior walkway toward Room 114.

Inside the cramped room, Marcus was sitting on the edge of a stained mattress, his head in his hands, surrounded by discarded takeout boxes and half-empty water bottles. Eleanor was huddled in the corner, clutching her designer handbag like a security blanket, while Khloe sat on the floor, staring blankly at the wall.

BANG! BANG! BANG!

"Federal agents! Open the door!" a loud voice boomed from outside.

Marcus jumped up, his face drained of all color. "No... no, no, no..."

Before anyone could move, the door was breached with a heavy battering ram, bursting open with a deafening crack.

"FBI! Hands where we can see them! Marcus Hart, do not move!"

Four agents surged into the room with weapons drawn. The lead agent—a sharp-eyed woman holding a rolled-up arrest warrant—stepped forward as two agents grabbed Marcus, spinning him around and slamming him face-first against the wall.

"Marcus Hart," the agent read coldly as the cold steel handcuffs clicked tightly around his wrists. "You are under arrest pursuant to a federal warrant issued by the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York. You are charged with sixteen counts of wire fraud, securities fraud, grand larceny, tax evasion, and aggravated identity theft."

"No!" Eleanor screamed, throwing herself toward the agents. "Get your hands off my son! Do you know who he is?! He is the founder of Apex Dynamics! He is a visionary!"

An agent stepped in front of Eleanor, holding her back. "Ma'am, step back or you will be charged with obstruction of justice!"

"It was my wife!" Marcus roared, screaming into the wall as the handcuffs bit into his wrists. "It was Chloe Vance! She framed me! She set me up! Look at her accounts! She’s the one who managed the money!"

"Save it for the judge, Mr. Hart," the lead agent replied dryly. "Your CFO and your tax attorney have already provided signed confessions and digital logs proving you forged your wife’s signatures to execute illegal offshore transfers."

Khloe burst into hysterical screams as two news camera crews—who had been tipped off by the legal press—appeared outside the motel room window, filming every second of Marcus being led out in handcuffs.

He was dragged through the parking lot in broad daylight, wearing a wrinkled suit, his hands cuffed behind his back, his face exposed to the blinding flashes of media cameras.

"Marcus! Did you steal eighteen million dollars from your wife?!" a reporter shouted, pushing a microphone toward his face.

"Marcus! What do you have to say to your investors?!" another yelled.

Marcus tried to hide his face against his shoulder, but the agents held him upright, marching him directly into the back of a black federal van.

As the van doors slammed shut, locking him in total darkness, Marcus looked through the tinted rear glass.

Standing across the street, leaning against a sleek black limousine, was Arthur Vance.

Arthur raised his leather glove in a slow, silent salute—a final, chilling message from the woman Marcus thought he could crush under his shoe.
