Chapter 5 - The War Begins

Within two hours, the grand entrance of the Whitmore estate had transformed into a scene of complete public humiliation.

Word had quickly leaked to the press—facilitated by a discreet phone call from Marcus Sterling's PR team. By noon, news vans from local outlets were parked at the end of the driveway, cameras filming every second as private movers loaded Margaret’s personal luggage into the trunk of a taxicab.

Daniel stood by the curb, frantically dialing his financial manager on his cell phone.

"What do you mean declined?!" Daniel screamed into the receiver, his voice cracking with desperation. "Try the Amex Black card! Try the corporate account! What do you mean frozen by federal order?!"

He slammed his phone down, pacing furiously on the asphalt. Vanessa stood a few feet away, her arms wrapped around her chest, shivering in a thin light jacket she had managed to grab before being marched out of the house. The arrogant grin she had worn the night before was completely gone, replaced by a expression of furious disbelief.

"Daniel, do something!" Vanessa hissed, her tone sharp and shrill. "My father is meeting us for lunch at the country club in an hour! I can't show up like this! Why are your credit cards turned off?!"

"Shut up, Vanessa!" Daniel snapped, grabbing his head in his hands. "My entire company just got frozen! I don't know what’s going on!"

Margaret emerged from the front doors, flanked by two sheriff deputies. She looked broken, her pristine silver hair windblown and disheveled, holding a small leather handbag like a shield. As she reached the bottom step, she locked eyes with my mother, who was sitting comfortably on the veranda sipping tea from a delicate china cup.

"You won't get away with this, Evelyn," Margaret spat, her voice trembling with rage. "My late husband built this family's reputation over forty years! You think a few court orders are going to ruin us? I have Arthur Montgomery on speed dial. By tomorrow morning, every judge in Virginia will know what you’ve done!"

Evelyn didn't even bother to look up from her tea. "Arthur Montgomery is a capable lawyer, Margaret. But he is also a pragmatist. And when he realizes that your son tried to use his daughter’s name to cover up sixty million dollars in international tax fraud, I suspect Arthur will cut his losses very quickly."

Margaret froze. The color completely drained from her face. "How... how do you know about that?"

"I built the forensic models that the federal government uses to track shell accounts, Margaret," Evelyn said smoothly, setting her cup down on the saucer with a soft clink. "Did you really think a mid-tier real estate family from Virginia could outsmart the woman who dismantled Apex Capital? You set a trap for my daughter. But you were too stupid to check who built the cage."

I walked out of the double doors, carrying a sleek black briefcase containing the true financial records of Whitmore Global Holdings that Marcus’s team had uncovered in the house's basement safe.

Daniel saw me and rushed forward, but Marcus immediately stepped between us, his massive frame blocking Daniel’s path.

"Claire!" Daniel yelled, his eyes wide with a manic mix of fear and desperation. "Claire, please! Think about Lily! What are you doing to her father?! How is she going to feel when she sees her family ruined on the news?!"

I stopped and looked at him. The man I had loved for seven years looked small, pathetic, and hollow.

"Lily cried herself to sleep last night because her father didn't care where she slept," I said coldly. "You didn't think about Lily when you brought Vanessa into our home. You didn't think about Lily when you let your mother call us trash. You only care about yourself, Daniel. And now, you’re going to suffer the consequences."

"Claire, I was confused!" Daniel begged, stepping closer as tears actually welled in his eyes. "Vanessa... Vanessa was a mistake! Margaret pressured me! You know how my mother is! She forced this whole thing! She wanted the Montgomery connection for the Senate race! Please, Claire, come inside, let’s talk... we can fix this!"

Vanessa snapped around, her eyes flashing with pure rage. "What did you just say, Daniel?!"

"Shut up, Vanessa!" Daniel screamed back at her, completely losing control. "This is your fault! You and your father pushed me into this!"

"My fault?!" Vanessa shrieked. "You swore to me you were divorcing her months ago! You told me she was an uneducated leech living off your money!"

As the two of them began screaming at each other on the driveway—their glamorous facade shattering in front of the news cameras filming from the gate—my mother placed a warm, steady hand on my shoulder.

"Come inside, Claire," Evelyn said quietly. "We have a business to run."
