Chapter 6 - Gathering the Digital Receipts

Over the next four days, maintaining a normal facade in front of David required every ounce of acting skill I possessed.

Every evening, he came home from work, kissed my cheek, asked how Lily was doing, and played the devoted, tired father. He wore his guilt like an invisible suit, overcompensating by doing the dishes or holding the baby while I supposedly rested upstairs.

And every night, exactly at 2 A.M., the baby monitor app would ping with motion detection.

I would roll over in bed, pretend to be fast asleep, and watch through my phone screen as David crept into the nursery with yet another brown paper bag, sliding more cash into the bottom drawer of the changing table.

On Friday night, the final piece of the digital puzzle fell into place.

While David was downstairs taking a long shower, his work laptop—left unsecured on the kitchen counter—buzzed with a notification. It wasn't an email; it was a cloud storage sync prompt from an external drive connected to his machine.

Without hesitating, I plugged a spare USB flash drive into the side of his laptop and initiated a bulk transfer of his hidden photo archives and financial folders.

It took less than ninety seconds for the progress bar to hit 100%. I ejected the drive, slipped it into my pocket, and walked away just as the bathroom door clicked open.

Later that night, after David finally fell asleep, I plugged the flash drive into my tablet and reviewed the contents.

Among the financial spreadsheets and secret lease documents was a sub-folder labeled “Elena & Leo.”

I clicked it open.

Photos filled the screen. Pictures of David holding a toddler boy who looked startlingly like Lily. Pictures of David standing in front of a suburban home—not the luxury apartment, but a house in the upscale suburbs—smiling alongside Elena Vance.

Wait.

Vance.

My breath caught. I stared at the name on the lease agreement again, and then at the woman in the photographs.

Elena Vance wasn't just a random apartment tenant. She was the sister of Julian Vance—a wealthy real estate developer in our county, and coincidentally, a major business competitor of David’s corporate firm.

The conspiracy went much deeper than a simple workplace affair. David hadn't just found a mistress; he had married into a rival business family through a fraudulent, unregistered ceremony, systematically funneling corporate funds and marital assets into a parallel empire designed to rival the very company where he currently worked.

I forwarded the entire folder to Evelyn Vance’s encrypted email with a single sentence attached:

“He isn’t just cheating. He’s committing corporate espionage and bigamy.”

Within ten minutes, my phone rang. It was Evelyn, her voice buzzing with exhilaration.

“Mrs. Thorne,” Evelyn said. “Forget just freezing his personal accounts. We are walking straight into the federal prosecutor’s office on Monday morning. Your husband just handed us the keys to his complete and total destruction.”
