Chapter 8 - The Awakening at the Hospital

As the afternoon sun cast a warm golden glow across the hospital room, a soft knock echoed at the open door.

Miller stepped into the room, holding a secure encrypted tablet. He caught Charles’s eye and gave a subtle, respectful nod.

Charles stood up quietly, kissing the top of Lucy’s head. "I need to take care of a little business in the hallway with Miller, princess. You and your mom hang tight for a minute."

"Okay, Grandpa!" Lucy chirped, already busy dressing her new teddy bear in an imaginary stethoscope made of ribbon.

Charles walked out into the private, carpeted corridor, pulling the door half-closed behind him.

"Report," Charles commanded quietly.

"The divorce filings have been drafted by our lead family law attorneys, sir," Miller reported, handing the tablet to Charles. "Absolute no-fault grounds, combined with emergency protective orders, full physical and legal custody of Lucy granted exclusively to Ms. Nora, and zero spousal support or asset distribution for Daniel Vance."

Charles scrolled through the digital document, his sharp eyes scanning every paragraph with approval. "What about his personal belongings?"

"We packed his clothes into two cheap plastic trash bags and had them dropped off at the front desk of the federal holding facility," Miller said with a faint, humorless smirk. "He’s officially stripped of everything."

"Good," Charles handed the tablet back. "Make sure the divorce papers are served to him in his holding cell within the hour. I want him to sign them before the sun sets today. If he refuses, remind him that the federal prosecutor has another twelve counts of wire fraud ready to file tomorrow morning."

"Consider it handled, Mr. Whitmore," Miller nodded, turning smartly on his heel and walking down the corridor.

Charles stood alone in the hallway for a moment, looking through the glass window into the hospital room. He watched Nora laughing softly as Lucy tried to make her teddy bear "listen" to her heartbeat with a plastic spoon.

For fourteen years—ever since Nora’s mother passed away—Charles had carried a quiet, persistent fear that he had failed as a father, that his relentless focus on building the Whitmore empire had somehow driven his daughter away, making her vulnerable to a predator like Daniel Vance.

Watching her now, standing tall, radiant, and fiercely protective of her child, Charles realized he hadn't failed at all. Nora had simply been enduring a winter season. And now, spring had finally arrived.

He pushed the door open and stepped back inside, ready to help his daughter write the next chapter of their lives.
