Chapter 8 - The Auction of Vanities

One month later.

The morning sun shone bright over the manicured grounds of the Vance Family Estate in the suburbs—a sprawling thirty-room Georgian mansion featuring marble fountains, heated pools, and ten acres of private gardens.

Today, those grounds were filled with white folding chairs, public auction banners, and dozens of curious high-society observers, bargain hunters, and news crews.

A giant red banner hung across the front portico:

COURT-ORDERED LIQUIDATION AUCTION ASSETS OF RICHARD & MARGARET VANCE

Inside the grand foyer, my mother stood near the oak staircase, wearing a cheap black coat she had bought at a department store, watching as auctioneers tagged her antique furniture, art collections, and grand piano with yellow inventory numbers.

Beside her stood Sienna, wearing dark sunglasses, her arms crossed tightly over her chest, staring blankly at the floor.

They had been evicted from the estate two days prior following the court-ordered forfeiture to repay the Vance Crest Holdings employee retirement fund.

I walked up the front marble steps, holding a clipboard alongside the court-appointed receiver.

My mother caught sight of me and stepped forward, her hands trembling. "Eleanor..."

I paused, looking at her. She looked smaller, withered, her polished pearl armor entirely gone.

"Are you happy now?" my mother rasped, her voice trembling with bitter rage. "You took everything. You took the company, you put your father in prison, you threw your sister into the street, and now you're selling my home!"

"I didn't take your home, Mother," I said mildly. "The federal government seized it to pay back the sixty-two middle-class factory workers whose retirement savings Dad stole to pay for your diamond necklaces and Sienna's wedding flowers."

"It was our family's legacy!" she wept.

"It was a crime scene," I corrected her.

At that moment, the head auctioneer raised his wooden gavel in the living room. "Item Number 42! Custom 18-karat diamond necklace and matching earring set! Bidding starts at fifty thousand dollars!"

My mother’s breath hitched in her throat. She took a step toward the doorway, clutching her chest. "My jewelry..."

"The synthetic replica, you mean?" I noted quietly. "The appraiser confirmed yesterday that the diamonds were glass. The state prosecutor added insurance fraud to Dad's indictment this morning."

My mother staggered back, hitting the stair banister, her face completely drained of expression. She looked at Sienna, but Sienna didn't move to comfort her. Sienna just stood there, staring at the floor, wrapped in her own cocoon of bitter ruin.

"What are we supposed to do?" Sienna whispered, looking up at me for the first time in weeks. "We have no money. We have no house. No one in this city will even speak to us."

"You can do what I did when you stole my life, Sienna," I said, looking at both of them with absolute clarity. "You can get a job. You can rent a small apartment. And you can learn how to live without stealing from other people."

I turned my back on them and walked down the steps toward the auction ring.

Behind me, the auctioneer’s gavel struck the wooden block with a sharp, echoing BANG.

"Sold!"
