Chapter 5 - The Corporate Trap

The following Tuesday morning, the air in the Calloway Logistics corporate headquarters downtown was thick with tension.

Maria sat at a mahogany desk on the top floor, wearing a sharp, tailored navy-blue suit that Richard had insisted on purchasing for her. She had officially been transitioned out of housekeeping and into Richard’s executive office as his personal administrative assistant—a move that had sent shockwaves through the entire corporate hierarchy.

“Don't let them intimidate you,” Richard had told her that morning, pinning a security badge to her lapel. “You have a sharper mind than half the board members down there. Trust yourself.”

She was reviewing shipping manifests when the heavy glass doors of the executive suite swung open.

In strode Vanessa Cole, flanked by two corporate attorneys and a senior compliance officer. She was dressed in an immaculate white Chanel dress, her sunglasses perched on top of her head, radiating toxic entitlement.

“Well, well, well,” Vanessa sneered, stopping right in front of Maria’s desk and leaning down. “Look at the maid playing dress-up in the corner office. Does Mr. Calloway know you’re wearing stolen clothes, or did he buy them with the allowance he gives his new favorite pet?”

Maria didn't flinch. She kept her posture straight, remembering the way Lily had danced with absolute dignity in the face of mockery.

“Good morning, Ms. Cole,” Maria said evenly, her voice steady. “Mr. Calloway is currently in a board meeting. If you’re here to see him, you’ll need an appointment.”

“I don't need an appointment to expose a thief,” Vanessa snapped, snapping her fingers at the compliance officer behind her.

The officer stepped forward, dropping a thick manila folder onto Maria’s desk with a sharp thud.

“We have received an anonymous whistleblower report, backed by internal server logs,” the compliance officer announced in a dry, bureaucratic tone. “Financial assets totaling fifty thousand dollars were allegedly transferred illegally from an escrow account to a private savings account registered under Maria Delgado over the weekend.”

Maria gasped, standing up from her chair. “That’s a complete lie! I don't even have access to company escrow accounts!”

“Oh, really?” Vanessa smiled maliciously, crossing her arms. “Then explain why your personal routing number is attached to the transfer. My father’s legal team audited your bank records this morning. You stole company funds within forty-eight hours of moving into the Calloway estate. Security is already on their way up to escort you out in handcuffs.”

The office door flew open.

Two burly corporate security guards stepped into the room, looking uncomfortable as they looked between Vanessa and Maria.

“Ms. Delgado,” one guard began awkwardly. “We’re sorry, but we have orders to—"

“You have orders to do your jobs properly,” a cold, lethal voice echoed from the private office doorway.

Richard Calloway stepped out, his tall frame cutting a terrifying silhouette against the glass windows. His face was like carved stone. He didn't look at Vanessa; he looked directly at the compliance officer.

“Mr. Calloway,” the compliance officer stammered, adjusting his tie. “We found an internal transfer irregularity pointing directly to Ms. Delgado’s newly opened account. We are legally obligated to investigate—”

“You are legally obligated to check your metadata before you embarrass yourself in my building,” Richard interrupted, walking slowly toward the desk.

He picked up the manila folder, flipped it open, and tossed it into the nearest shredder without even reading a page.

Vanessa’s smile faltered. “Richard! What are you doing? She’s a thief!”

“She’s not a thief, Vanessa,” Richard said, his voice dropping an octave as he stopped inches away from her. “Because the account you claim she stole money into? It’s a restricted corporate holding account that I personally established at 6:00 AM today, depositing fifty thousand dollars as a hardship bonus for her relocation.”

The room went dead silent.

“You... you set a trap?” Vanessa whispered, horror dawning in her eyes.

“No, Vanessa,” Richard replied, his dark eyes locking onto hers with terrifying clarity. “You walked into a trap. Your father’s auditing team accessed my private server logs using an unauthorized backdoor IP address originating from Senator Cole’s private residence. Which means your father just committed industrial espionage and wire fraud to frame an innocent employee.”

The compliance officer’s face went completely white. He turned and bolted out of the office without a word. Vanessa’s attorneys took one look at Richard’s face, grabbed their briefcases, and hurried out behind him.

Left alone in the center of the room, Vanessa stared at Richard, her breath catching in her throat.

“You... you can't do this to me,” she whispered, her voice cracking. “We’re supposed to be married!”

“The engagement was canceled the moment you tried to destroy a child in my ballroom,” Richard said coldly. “Get out of my building, Vanessa. And tell your father to start packing his bags, because the harbor isn't big enough for both of us anymore.”
