Chapter 8 - The Autopsy Speaks

Thirty-six hours later.

The State Medical Examiner’s Headquarters in Baltimore smelled of ozone, formaldehyde, and industrial disinfectant.

I sat in a private briefing room behind a double-paned observation window. Leo was asleep in a portable car seat beside me, wrapped in a soft navy-blue blanket Major Chen had bought for him at the base exchange.

The door opened, and Dr. Evelyn Vance—Chief Medical Examiner for the district and Major Vance’s sister—walked in, wearing a blue lab coat. She pulled off her surgical mask, her face solemn.

"Daniel," she said gently, sitting down across from me. "I've completed the preliminary post-mortem analysis."

"Give it to me straight, Doc," I said. "I need it for the record."

Evelyn opened a black leather folder containing high-resolution autopsy photographs and chemical lab sheets.

"Your wife did not die of sudden eclampsia or obstetric shock," Evelyn stated clearly. "The toxicology screen revealed lethal concentrations of potassium chloride and concentrated oxytocin in her bloodstream. The combination induced violent, unmonitored uterine contractions while simultaneously paralyzing her cardiac muscle."

My knuckles turned white against the edge of the table, but I kept my face still. "And the physical markings?"

"She was restrained," Evelyn confirmed, pointing to a series of deep tissue scans on her lightboard. "Subcutaneous hemorrhaging around both wrists consistent with heavy leather straps or physical restraint. And the petechiae on her throat... there was secondary asphyxiation. Someone held a soft object—likely a pillow—over her face during the final stages of cardiac arrest to prevent her from screaming."

"She fought them," I whispered.

"She fought with everything she had, Daniel," Evelyn said softly, her eyes glistening with tears. "The skin tissue found under her fingernails contains DNA matching both Caleb Brooks and Margaret Brooks. She made sure they left their signatures on her."

I closed my eyes for a long five seconds, letting the pain burn through me, cauterizing the last remnants of grief into pure, unyielding resolve.

"The evidence is ironclad," Evelyn added. "Between your hidden video recordings, the memory card from her hand, the toxicology report, and Dr. Harrison’s full written confession signed an hour ago, the State Attorney General is filing charges of First-Degree Capital Murder, Aggravated Kidnapping, Conspiracy, and Child Endangerment."

"Will they seek the death penalty?" I asked.

"For Margaret, absolutely," Evelyn replied. "And Caleb is looking at life without the possibility of parole."

I stood up, walked over to the window, and looked down at the peaceful city skyline below. The sun was breaking through the gray morning clouds, casting a warm golden light across the water.

"Thank you, Evelyn," I said quietly. "Now I can finally lay my wife to rest."
