Chapter 8 - The Truth He Refused to Hear

The trap was set for Monday morning during the quarterly board meeting at Morrison Dynamics.

Kevin walked into the glass-walled boardroom on the fortieth floor with the cold, calculated precision of a man who had nothing left to lose and everything to protect. The board members sat around the mahogany table, murmuring quietly among themselves. Marcus Vance sat at the right hand of the CEO’s empty chair, wearing an expensive silk tie and a smug, confident smile.

"Morning, Kevin," Marcus said smoothly as Kevin took his seat at the head of the table. "You look like you haven't slept in days. Still dealing with the domestic chaos at home? I told you, you need a professional nanny agency, not whatever stray domestic help you picked off the street."

Kevin didn't answer immediately. He slowly slid a thick manila folder across the polished mahogany surface straight toward Marcus.

Marcus chuckled, glancing down at the folder. "What's this? Another quarterly projection?"

"Open it," Kevin said, his voice slicing through the silence of the room like a scalpel.

Marcus opened the folder. As his eyes scanned the first page—a detailed transaction record linking his offshore accounts directly to the tampering of corporate vehicles and the digital logs of the brake-line maintenance crew—the color drained completely from his face. His skin turned the shade of wet cement.

"This... this is fabricated," Marcus stammered, standing up so abruptly his chair screeched against the floor. "Kevin, what is this nonsense? Are you losing your mind over your wife’s death?"

"You didn't just steal from this company, Marcus," Kevin said, standing up slowly, towering over his former friend with an aura of cold, terrifying authority. "You thought you could get away with framing me for your crimes. And when Lauren found out... you made sure she never made it home."

"That's a lie!" Marcus shouted, turning to the surrounding board members. "He's unstable! He's grieving! He's hallucinating!"

At that exact moment, the heavy double doors of the boardroom swung open.

Abigail Vance walked in, wearing a sharp charcoal blazer, accompanied by two federal agents in dark suits and Miller carrying a secure data server.

Marcus froze, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. "Abigail... what are you..."

"Hello, brother," Abigail said, her voice steady and echoing clearly across the silent boardroom. "I told you a long time ago that your greed would be your undoing. I just didn't expect it to take this long."
