Chapter 4 - The Billionaire's Shadows

The name Rossi syndicate hung in the air like a foul odor.
For the public, Daniel Hargrove was a visionary real estate developer who built skyscrapers, luxury hotels, and massive residential complexes across Manhattan. But the underworld of New York—and the old-money families who quietly controlled the eastern seaboard—knew the real truth.
Daniel was the head of the Hargrove Syndicate, a secretive, ruthlessly efficient empire built on inherited power, untraceable capital, and absolute control over the city's financial lifelines. You didn't cross a Hargrove and live to enjoy the sunshine. And you certainly didn't attempt to use a multi-billion-dollar corporate marriage as a front to steal his assets and hand them over to a rival Chicago crime family.
Daniel walked out of the study, leaving Rosa and Lily safely locked inside under guard, and strode down the long, carpeted corridor toward the west wing. His long black overcoat billowed slightly behind him like the wings of a crow. Marcus flanked his right shoulder, a heavy tablet displaying security feeds and intercepted communications in his hands.
"Tell me everything you have on Ryan Vance," Daniel commanded, his voice cold and devoid of human warmth.
"Vance was a rising star in the Chicago Outfit until three years ago, when the Rossi family absorbed his crew," Marcus reported, tapping the screen of his tablet as they walked. "He and Vanessa Cole were engaged in secret four years ago. When Vance’s father died leaving massive gambling debts, Vanessa dumped him and fled to New York to reinvent herself as a high-society darling."
"And she set her sights on me," Daniel finished the thought, his slate-gray eyes narrowing.
"Precisely, boss. But according to these intercepted text messages we decrypted from a burner phone found in Vance’s abandoned rented sedan outside the garage... they never broke ties. The wedding was supposed to be a hostile corporate takeover. Once the marriage certificates were signed and filed tomorrow morning, Vanessa would have legal claim over thirty percent of your liquid holdings through pre-nuptial loopholes her corrupt lawyers snuck into the contract."
Daniel stopped walking in front of a pair of heavy mahogany double doors leading to the master suite.
"And the ring?" Daniel asked.
"A promise ring from their original engagement in Chicago," Marcus replied. "February 14th of four years ago. She was supposed to destroy it, but she kept it as a morbid token of their little conspiracy."
Daniel stared at the golden handle of the door.
Inside that suite sat his brand-new bride—the woman who had smiled into his eyes at the altar, kissed his cheek under the flash of a hundred cameras, and plotted his financial ruin alongside a syndicate foot soldier.
"Where is she now?" Daniel asked quietly.

"Waiting in the master dressing room," Marcus said. "Guarded by four of our best men. She thinks you're just a wealthy man having a domestic dispute. She doesn't realize you know about Chicago."
Daniel reached out, gripped the golden handle, and pushed the door open.
