Chapter 5 - The Gala of Retribution

Three weeks later.
The Grand Ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was bathed in shimmering gold light. Massive crystal chandeliers hung from the vaulted ceilings, casting thousands of dancing sparkles across the polished floor. Five hundred of the city’s most influential elites—billionaires, politicians, tech executives, and high-society journalists—filled the room for the annual Vance Global Charity Gala.
It was the most exclusive event of the social season.
Standing near the open bar, wearing a rented tuxedo that fit a little too loosely around his waist, was Dylan Sterling.
Beside him stood Sierra Robles, wearing a dazzling crimson gown with a plunging neckline, her wrists dripping with diamond bracelets. Sierra was sipping expensive champagne, her eyes darting around the room with hungry ambition.
In three weeks, Dylan’s world had turned into a nightmare. Sterling Enterprises was on the brink of bankruptcy. His board of directors had stripped him of his executive voting power. His joint bank accounts were frozen. The only reason his company hadn't completely dissolved yet was because Vance Capital had temporarily paused the final liquidation hearing.
Dylan believed this gala was his last salvation.
He had begged, pleaded, and used every remaining contact he had to secure two invitations to the Vance Gala, believing that if he could meet the mysterious Board of Directors of Vance Capital in person, he could convince them to grant him a restructuring loan.
"Dylan, honey," Sierra whispered, leaning her head on his shoulder. "Are you sure the Chairwoman of Vance Capital will be here tonight? If she gives us the fifty million loan, can we still buy the house in the Hamptons?"
Dylan gritted his teeth, pulling his arm away slightly. "Sierra, shut up about the house. If I don't get this funding tonight, I'm going to lose everything. The bank is foreclosing on the main villa on Friday."
"Oh, don't be so dramatic," Sierra pouted, swirling her glass. "Elena is just throwing a tantrum. Once her little money runs out, she'll come crawling back to you. She has no family, no talent, and no status. Where else could she go?"
Before Dylan could answer, the room’s ambient chatter suddenly died down.
A spotlight flickered onto the grand marble staircase at the front of the ballroom.
The master of ceremonies stepped up to the microphone, his voice echoing clearly through the speaker system:
"Ladies and gentlemen, distinguished guests... please welcome the Chairwoman and Chief Executive Officer of Vance Capital Global... Miss Elena Vance!"
The crowd broke into thunderous applause.
Dylan froze, his champagne glass hovering inches from his mouth. Sierra frowned, looking toward the staircase. "Elena Vance? Is that a relative of your ex-wife?"
Down the marble staircase walked a woman who looked like she had been sculpted from ice and diamond.
I wore a floor-length emerald green silk gown that draped flawlessly over my shoulders, concealing the healing bandages beneath. My dark hair was swept up into an elegant chignon, secured with a antique diamond tiara that had belonged to my grandmother. My skin was glowing, my posture regal and unbroken.
Walking beside me, holding my hand with absolute confidence, was six-year-old Haley. She wore a matching white silk dress, looking like a little princess, her eyes bright and filled with joy.
Beside us walked Arthur Pendelton, flanked by four towering security guards in dark suits.
The room held its collective breath at the sheer, suffocating elegance radiating from the stage.
Dylan’s champagne glass slipped from his fingers, shattering against the marble floor with a sharp crash that echoed in his ears.
"No..." Dylan gasped, his eyes bulging out of his head. "No... that's... that's Elena..."
Sierra’s jaw dropped, her face turning green as she stared at the woman on stage—the woman she had dismissed as a pathetic, helpless housewife.
I stepped up to the podium, adjusting the golden microphone. My eyes swept over the sea of faces, landing directly on Dylan and Sierra standing near the bar.
A cold, beautiful smile touched my lips.
"Good evening, everyone," my voice resonated through the hall, calm, powerful, and utterly commanding. "Welcome to the annual Vance Foundation Gala. Tonight, as we celebrate ten years of global philanthropic investment, Vance Capital is making a major announcement regarding our corporate portfolio."
Dylan took a frantic step forward, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird.
"Effective midnight tonight," I continued, looking dead into Dylan's terrified eyes, "Vance Capital has completed the total asset recall and foreclosure of Sterling Enterprises."
A collective gasp swept through the ballroom.

"Furthermore," I said, my voice cutting through the murmurs like a diamond blade, "we have initiated legal proceedings for grand fraud and embezzlement against former executive Dylan Sterling, as well as criminal negligence charges against Miss Sierra Robles regarding the hotel safety violations that endangered dozens of children three weeks ago."
The ballroom erupted into chaos. Flashbulbs began flashing furiously as journalists turned their cameras directly toward the pale, shaking man in the rented suit.
