Chapter 8 - The Desperate Offer

By three weeks after the party, Richard and Vanessa were staying in a cramped two-bedroom extended-stay motel near the highway.
Their credit cards had been declined, their luxury vehicles repossessed by the trust's legal team, and Richard was facing pending criminal charges for corporate embezzlement.
At 7:00 PM on a rainy Tuesday, Elena was finishing her administrative shift at Saint Jude’s Hospital. She walked out into the brightly lit hospital lobby, holding her coat and umbrella.
Standing near the automatic glass doors was Vanessa.
She looked entirely unreckonable from the woman who had walked across the lawn in white linen pants three weeks ago. Her roots were showing, her clothes were unironed, and her eyes were bloodshot and desperate.
"Elena..." Vanessa said, stepping into her path, her voice hollow and raspy.
Elena stopped, keeping a safe five-foot distance. "Vanessa. You shouldn't be here. There is an active trespass order regarding my workplace."
"Please," Vanessa begged, dropping all her former arrogance, her hands trembling as she held a worn faux-leather purse. "Just give me five minutes. That’s all I'm asking."
Elena sighed quietly, stepping to a quieter corner of the lobby near the chapel doors. "What do you want, Vanessa?"
"Richard is facing five years in prison," Vanessa wept, dabbing her bloodshot eyes with a crumpled napkin. "Our accounts are frozen. We can't even afford a proper criminal defense lawyer. We are living in a motel, Elena! Sloane and Parker are sleeping on a pull-out couch!"
"Actions have consequences, Vanessa," Elena said gently but firmly.
"You win, okay?!" Vanessa sobbed, lifting her hands in surrender. "You won! You took the money, you took the house, you destroyed our reputation! Is that what you wanted?! Are you happy now?!"
Elena looked at her sister-in-law with a profound, quiet sorrow.
"I never wanted any of this, Vanessa," Elena said. "I didn't ask Margaret for a single penny of her trust. I was content working my shifts, raising my daughter, and living in my modest house."
"Then give it back!" Vanessa pleaded, grabbing Elena’s sleeve. "Talk to Margaret! Tell her to drop the charges against Richard! Tell her to unfreeze our allowance! We'll leave the state! You'll never have to see us again!"
Elena slowly peeled Vanessa’s fingers off her coat sleeve.
"Do you know what Mia asked me the night after the party?" Elena asked softly.
Vanessa blinked, confused. "What?"
"She asked me if being a nurse was something to be ashamed of," Elena whispered, her eyes shining with quiet steel. "She asked me if we were 'bad people' because we didn't have gold cupcakes or designer sneakers."
Vanessa lowered her eyes, unable to meet Elena’s gaze.
"You didn't just tease a child, Vanessa," Elena continued. "You tried to break her spirit so you could feel superior for twenty minutes at a birthday party. You taught her that her mother’s hard work was something lowly."
May you like
"I was wrong..." Vanessa whispered.
"Yes, you were," Elena said, stepping past her toward the glass doors. "And now you get to learn what every hard-working person knows: respect isn't inherited. It’s earned. I won't ask Margaret to drop a single charge. Let the law take its course."
