Chapter 6 - The Siege of the Estate

The iron gates of the Vale estate in Westchester swung open to admit the black Maybach, followed closely by two armored SUVs carrying twelve elite security operatives.

Maya sat in the back seat, holding little Owen tightly against her chest, while Noah and Ivy pressed their faces against the tinted windows, staring in awe at the sprawling limestone mansion that looked like a European castle surrounded by acres of manicured lawns.

"Is this our new house, Daddy?" Ivy asked innocently.

Sebastian froze. He looked from the little girl to Maya. A warm, tender ache bloomed in his chest.

"Yes, princess," Sebastian answered softly before Maya could speak. "This is your home now."

They stepped out into the crisp afternoon air. Maya looked up at the towering stone facade, feeling a familiar knot of anxiety in her stomach. This was the house that had nearly destroyed her four years ago.

"Sebastian," she murmured, grabbing his sleeve. "Your grandfather lives here. How is this safe?"

"My grandfather has retired," Sebastian said, his voice hard as iron as he guided her toward the massive double doors. "And anyone who crosses these gates answers to me."

They spent the next three days settling into the east wing of the mansion. Sebastian had gutted the guest suites, turning them into a vibrant, sunlit nursery and playrooms filled with toys, books, and everything three four-year-olds could possibly need.

For the first time in her life, Maya didn't have to worry about whether she could afford groceries or heating oil. But the ghost of the past still hung heavily in the air.

On the fourth night, while the children were finally asleep in their new beds, Sebastian found Maya standing on the stone balcony of the master suite, wrapped in a cashmere shawl, staring out over the dark gardens.

He walked up behind her, slipping his arms around her waist and pulling her back against his chest. She didn't resist. She leaned into him, letting out a long, shuddering breath.

"I keep waiting to wake up," Maya whispered. "Waiting to find out this is all some cruel dream."

"It’s real," Sebastian murmured, pressing his lips against her temple. "Every single second of it. I’m never letting you go again, Maya."

Suddenly, the security lights along the perimeter fence flared into brilliant white beams.

Down in the driveway, the sharp, distinct pop-pop-pop of suppressed gunfire cut through the night air.

Sebastian’s body went rigid. In less than a second, all the softness vanished, replaced by the lethal instinct of a mafia don trained for war.

"Stay inside," Sebastian ordered, pushing her gently toward the bedroom doors. "Lock them from the inside. Do not open them for anyone except me."

"Sebastian—"

May you like

"Go!"

He turned, drawing the heavy Sig Sauer pistol from his shoulder holster as he sprinted down the private staircase toward the ground floor.
