Chapter 10 - A New Dawn

Two years later.

The morning sun poured across the wide wooden porch of the farmhouse in Cedar Hollow, casting a golden glow over two small toddlers chasing a sleepy, graying German Shepherd across the freshly mown lawn.

Duke was older now, his muzzle completely white, but he still possessed the infinite patience required to let a two-year-old boy pull gently on his tail while his twin sister offered him imaginary tea from a plastic cup.

I stood leaning against the porch railing, holding a mug of hot coffee, watching my family play in the morning light.

Footsteps crunched on the gravel path as Garrison walked up from the garden, carrying a basket of freshly harvested tomatoes and green beans. He stopped at the foot of the stairs, looking up at me with those familiar, striking blue eyes that still made my heart skip a beat after all this time.

“Breakfast is almost ready,” he announced, wiping his hands on a kitchen towel. “Though I think Leo is trying to feed Duke his entire scrambled egg.”

I laughed, setting my coffee mug down on the porch table and walking down the steps to meet him.

Garrison dropped the basket, wrapping his strong arms around my waist and pulling me flush against his chest, lifting me slightly off the ground as I wrapped my arms around his neck.

“You know,” I murmured against his shoulder, breathing in the scent of cedar, earth, and coffee. “Sometimes I look back at that night—the night Julian locked me out, the night I thought my entire world had ended—and I realize it was actually the best thing that ever happened to me.”

Garrison pulled back, looking down into my eyes with a quiet, fierce intensity.

“You survived because you were always stronger than you knew, Chloe,” he said softly, pressing his lips to mine in a slow, deep kiss that tasted of forever. “I just made sure the wolves couldn't reach you while you found your wings.”

Across the lawn, little Leo squealed with laughter as Duke gave a gentle bark of mock protest, rolling over in the grass while his sister clapped her hands in delight.

I rested my head against Garrison’s chest, listening to the steady, powerful rhythm of his heartbeat.

The past was buried deep. The lies had been swept away.

And out of the ruins of a broken life, we had built a fortress of truth, resilience, and unconditional love that nothing in this world could ever tear down.
