Chapter 9 - Fire on the Perimeter

The sound of heavy assault rifle fire echoed across the grounds of the Caruso estate, shattering the quiet night air.

Damian reacted instantly. He pulled a concealed black semi-automatic pistol from his shoulder holster, his expression hardening into pure, unadulterated steel.

"Stay in this room!" Damian ordered, grabbing my arm and pulling me into the master suite’s walk-in safe room. "Lock the door from the inside! Do not open it for anyone except me or Marcus!"

"Damian, be careful!" I cried, holding Leah tight against my chest as she woke up, startled by the loud noises outside.

"I’m not dying tonight, Maya," Damian vowed, his eyes flashing with lethal intent. "I have too much to live for now."

He slammed the heavy steel safe room door shut, and I heard the electronic lock engage from the outside.

Inside the safe room, monitors displayed live feeds from thirty security cameras across the estate. I watched in horror as two dozen armed men clad in dark tactical gear pushed through the ruined wrought-iron gates, exchanging fire with Damian’s elite security force.

Julianna Vance’s brother, Arthur Vance—a notorious, ruthless syndicate boss—was leading the attack himself. He wanted the paper trail, the signed confessions, and the digital drives destroyed before the FBI could lock down their family’s assets.

Through the central monitor, I saw Damian move across the grand foyer like a shadow.

He didn't just defend; he hunted. Moving with terrifying, fluid speed, Damian flanked the advancing mercenaries, taking them down with cold, surgical precision. Beside him, Marcus and his team held the main staircase, creating an impenetrable wall of steel between the attackers and the upper floors where Leah and I were hidden.

Arthur Vance burst through the grand entrance, holding an assault rifle, shouting orders to his remaining men. "Find the drive! Burn the house down if you have to!"

Damian stepped out from behind a marble column twenty feet away.

"Looking for me, Arthur?" Damian’s voice echoed through the grand foyer, cold and clear over the gunfire.

Arthur whipped his rifle around, but Damian was faster.

Bang. Bang.

Two precise shots echoed through the hall. Arthur Vance dropped his weapon, collapsing onto his knees, clutched his shoulder and thigh, groaning in pain as his remaining men threw down their weapons and raised their hands in complete surrender as sirens began to wail in the distance.

The police had arrived.

On the security monitor, I watched Damian lower his weapon, wipe the sweat from his forehead, and turn straight toward the camera feed leading to the safe room.

He looked directly into the lens and offered a calm, reassuring nod.

It was over. The nightmare was finally dead.
